Friday Five: The Best of the Arts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Friday Five: Five of the best theatre, concerts, and art events happening in NYC and around LI.

1.)   This Is Our Youth – Broadway

Interested in an evening of theatre? Head into NYC this weekend and see the Broadway revival of This Is Our Youth starring Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, and Tavi Gevison. “This Is Our Youth follows three wayward young people as they navigate 1982 New York, recreating their broken homes in both their dysfunctional friendships and their bungled attempts at finding love. This Is Our Youth is a living snapshot of the moment when young people first find themselves on the threshold of adulthood—far more sophisticated than their parents realize, and far less effectual than they themselves can possibly imagine.” (thisisouryouthbroadway.com) The New York Times calls playwright Kenneth Lonergan “arguably the most important American playwright of the last 20 years.” Ticket prices range from $35-$135 with shows happening now through January 4th, 2015. 2.)   Drunk Shakespeare – 21+ Only

It’s simple and genius. A self-proclaimed “drinking club with a Shakespeare problem,” the evening begins with one cast member drinking a bit too much alcohol before leading the cast through a Shakespeare play in 60 minutes. As you can imagine it can get quite outrageous. Unfortunately for some of us, this show is 21+ only. Tickets are about $33 with shows at 8PM (Friday and Saturday at 8 and 10PM). 3.)   Lorde + Majical Cloudz

New Zealand pop goddess Lorde is playing three shows in New York with Montreal duo Majical Cloudz. With concerts selling out all over the world, this is a show you’ll want to see! She is performing Sunday, September 14th-Tuesday September 16th. Tickets are about $60. This is definitely a show you don’t want to miss.

4.)   The March of The Bonus Army – Cap 21 Studios

Directed by Hofstra University’s very own Cindy Rosenthal, The March of The Bonus Army tells the story of WWI veterans who marched on D.C. demanding wartime compensation payments. “Based on true events, The March of The Bonus Army tells the story of these veterans of the Great War and their fight for dignity.” This production features a number of Hofstra Department of Drama and Dance students and alumni. 5.)   The Gray Wig Alumni Theater Company presents The Music Man in Concert

“The Gray Wig Alumni Theater is a chartered affiliation group of the Hofstra University Alumni Organization, seeking to raise money for scholarships, host activities, and deliver high-quality theatrical productions to the Hofstra University and Long Island communities.” From September 6th-14th at the Adams Playhouse there will be a staged concert featuring fully orchestrated renditions of “Seventy Six Trombones,” “My White Knight,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” Till There Was You,” and more. Other honorable mentions include the CM Performing Arts Center production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and the Suffolk County Community College Lively Arts Series presents Vocal Trash: Glee meets Stomp!
