Friday Five: The Best of the Arts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Five of the best theatre, concerts, and art events happening in NYC and around LI.

1.     Les Misérables – Broadway

The revival of Les Misérables is one of the most exciting shows to hit Broadway in years. It is based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel about heartbreak, passion, and the resilience of the human spirirt in 19th century France. Starring Ramin Karimloo, Will Swenson, Caissie Levy, and Nikki M. James this revival of one of the world’s most celebrated musicals is an ABSOLUTE must see! Tickets are available online at http://www.lesmis.com/broadway/ or at the Imperial Theater box office on West 45th. I recommend looking into Student Rush discounts.

2.     The Motherfucker with the Hat – Hofstra University

“Acclaimed young playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis’ fast-moving, foulmouthed comedy-drama about the moral dilemmas caused by misplaced love and fidelity in the modern world. The Wall Street Journal called it ‘one of the best new plays to come to Broadway in ages’” Opening October 3rd Hofstra’s Department of Drama and Dance presents The Motherfucker with the Hat. Dates and times are available at http://www.hofstra.edu/Academics/Colleges/HCLAS/DD/dd_events.html and two free tickets are available with your Hofstra ID ($10/ticket without Hofstra ID).

3.     Macbeth – The Theatre Project @ The Players Theatre

Burlesque. Treachery. Violence. “A nobleman and his wife descend into a nightmare of mental disquiet after murdering their king in the latest mounting of Shakespeare’s ubiquitous tragedy, this one set in a Prohibition speakeasy and featuring bits of vaudeville and burlesque.” (TimeOutNY) Shakespeare’s play of corruption and betrayal set against the Jazz Age opens a new view into the classic tale.

4.     Cabaret – Studio 54

Cabaret is on Broadway again! A decade late, the Kit Kat Klub reopens. Based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play I Am a Camera, Cabaret is set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power. It is based in nightlife at the Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young writer Cliff Bradshaw. Tickets are available on www.broadway.com and at the Roundabout Theatre Company box office.

5.     The Way Station – Brooklyn 21+ Only

The Way Station is a nerdy bar with basically the coolest indie concerts ever. It is a bar so unfortunately for some, you must be 21+ to attend. They have multiple performances a night. Some upcoming performers include Alex Alexion, The Doubleclicks, Natalie Mishell, Bucky Hayes and more! A $5 donation is recommended at the door. For a full calendar of performers visit http://waystationbk.blogspot.com/p/events.html
