Celeb Spot: A Peek into Joey King’s Career and Movie Roles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Actress Joey King has been stirring up excitement on social media for her new Hulu original series The Act, due on March 20. While some people are just learning her name, others may recognize her from roles she played as a child.

King started acting at just 4 years old, landing her first professional gig for a Life Cereal commercial. Since then, the 19-year-old has appeared in various television shows (CSI: Crime Scene InvestigationEntourage and Medium, to name a few) and has voiced characters for animations like Horton Hears a Who! She was even featured in Taylor Swift’s “Mean” music video as the girl getting ignored by bullies. Her career seems to be on an uphill trajectory as she awaits the premiere of The Act after just learning her 2018 film The Kissing Booth is getting a sequel.

King has proven herself to be a dedicated actress, having shaved her head for three different roles within eight years for her career. In an interview with Teen Vogue, the rising star said her goal is to show she is a diversified, serious actress. “I just really want to show people that what I do is so important to me, no matter what kind of role it is. I want to show people that I can do any kind of role. That I can take on anything and really just go at it 110%,” she divulged.

The actress also has a long line of movies under her belt, even starring adjacent to Selena Gomez when she was 9. Here are some films in which you can catch Joey King play a big role.

Ramona and Beezus (2010)

This was King’s first lead role. She starred alongside singer/actress Selena Gomez as Ramona Quimby, an adventurous third-grader who easily finds herself in all sorts of mischief. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she explained how thankful she is for the career-changing film. “I’m so appreciative of that film and everything it did for me,” she said. “But I’m so excited now for people to see me go from something like that to all the things I’ve had in between.”

The Conjuring (2013)

The talented actress plays Christine, one of the kids of the haunted family being terrorized at their farmhouse.

Family Weekend (2013)

King plays one of multiple siblings who take their parents hostage to fix their behavior. In an interview with IMDB, she said this is a hilarious movie that deserves more attention.

Wish I Was Here (2014)

King plays Grace Bloom, the daughter of a man who finds himself at a pivotal time in his life, which causes him to re-examine his family and career. This is the second movie for which the brave actress shaved her head. Her first stint with buzzed locks was when she was 11 for The Dark Knight Rises.

Smartass (2017)

King plays Freddie, a teenager who uses her wit and charm to survive in life after prison.

Wish Upon (2017)

In this movie, Clare Shannon (Joey King) receives an old music box form her dad and discovers its deadly magical powers.

Slender Man (2018)

In her own words, Slender Man is a “pee-your-pants” type of movie about friends who investigate the mysterious Slender Man, and things go wrong.

The Kissing Booth (2018)

Shelly “Elle” Evans, played by King, volunteers to work a kissing booth at the spring carnival. She never expected her crush to show up, though. King and her co-star Joel Courtney celebrated Valentine’s Day by announcing that the Netflix success would get a follow-up movie.
