A Broke Girl’s Guide to Making Money

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

If you’re in college, you already know you’re broke. You’re spending money on food that isn’t from your dining hall, coffee and let’s not forget the liquor. And if you’re like me, you’re struggling to find more money, even if it’s just pennies in your pockets.

And you can easily find a part-time job, maybe on campus, or at the mall down the street. But, that money may just be going to help pay off your loans (trust me, you’re going to want to do that). So, what is there to do? There are a few options, and I’m not saying you’re going to get rich real quick, but it’s enough to fund you for a bit, I’d think.

The first thing that you can do is starting a service for dorm rooms. I can bet there are plenty of guys who don’t want to clean their dorm, or people who would pay you to do their homework. As bad as that sounds, that may just be true. So, find a room who is willing to pay you for a clean room or a passing paper and you could probably make a few bucks just like that.

Another one that isn’t time consuming but could take a while is doing online surveys. There are a few websites that allow you to sign up for free, take surveys, and give you points in order to make some money. It may take a while, but I think once you rack up enough points you can make some extra cash.

My favorite one, personally, is the bottle collecting service. We’re college students, we throw parties. And what happens when you have all these bottles in your room? You can recycle them for five cents a bottle. Collect enough bottles and save up your money, it’ll add up quick.

One more moneymaker I like is saving coins. We are always looking to get rid of change, but why? Get a jar, save up and watch your coins stack up. By doing so, you don’t realize how much you’re making. Every time you get change, save the coins. When you find coins in your car, collect those. One time, I had forty dollars saved up in coins. It really helps!

As a college girl, we want to spend. Shopping for a new wardrobe, for a spring break trip, or just for fun. These tactics will help you make some money (just spend wisely!)
