The Best & Worst Dressed of the 2017 Oscars

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Awards season is probably my favorite time of the year; not to honor the accomplishments of those in film, music, etc. (which is important though) but more importantly to see what celebrities wear on the red carpet. I have always been the one to pretend they are a guest star on Fashion Police alongside my mother as we take our picks of who was the best and worst dressed of the night. Although I could not be on the couch with my mom tonight, I still of course had to make my picks. Now these are solely my opinions, so if you disagree, I apologize. Now let’s get to the ~celebrities~.

BEST DRESSED

Dev Patel

After seeing his performance in Lion, I lowkey am now ~obsessed~ with Dev Patel, but you have to admit, this Burberry suit looks SO good on him. In my eyes, there are very few individuals that could pull off the white jacket/black pant combination, but he makes it work. Plus, I love how his jacket is on the creamier side because it compliments his skin really well.

Emma Stone

Not only did Emma Stone take home the award for Best Acress for her role in La La Land, but she also took home the award for looking absolutely radiant. I have always been a fan of Emma Stone and she was also on my best dressed list last year and once again, she impressed me. Each year she always knows how to exude elegance in her look, and the shades of gold in her dress complement her so well. Plus, the sweetheart neckline of this Givenchy dress adds a flirty vibe, perfect for the woman of the hour.

Nicole Kidman

The look of this Oscars could be summed up in one word – sparkle. I absolutely love this Armani Privé look on Nicole Kidman. From the high neckline to the embroidery detail, she looked absolutely stunning. She kept her makeup look simple, but adding a pop of color with the orangey red lip, as well as putting her hair up in order to show off the neckline and detail of the dress. Plus, the peach shade of the dress added a touch of fun to her look.

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts ~screams~ Old Hollywood glamour with this look. She looks so classy and elegant in this black and white look from Armani Privé. Plus, red lip was the perfect touch for this look – it added a pop of color as well as accented her new red hair perfectly.

Hailee Steinfield

Hailee Steinfield looks like an actual fairy princess in this dress from Ralph and Russo. The flower detailing and opalescent color look absolutely stunning on her. She looks so grown up and mature with her hair pulled back and smokey eye look. I am actually ~obsessed~ with this dress! I want one of my own so badly, do you think they have an extra in my size?

Auli’i Cravalho

This Rubin Singer dress looks absolutely stunning on Auli’i Carvalho. Not only does she play a princess as Moana, but she looks like an actual princess on the red carpet. The Old Hollywood curls are the perfect addition to this look as well as the natural makeup that highlights her best facial feautures. The detail and ruching of the dress help flatter her figure so well, I am obsessed.

John Legend & Chrissy Teigen

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have to be my favorite Hollywood couple and I might have to say my favorites of the night. They look so good together! From the thigh slit of Chrissy’s Zuhair Murad dress to John’s Gucci suit, I am swooning over this couple! Plus, the pattern on Chrissy’s dress is so interesting, yet it works and it helps that she looks absolutely gorgeous in cream and gold. The level of obsession I have for this couple is probably abnormal, but they surely did not disappoint with this look. Do you think they would be willing to adopt me?

WORST DRESSED

Janelle Monae

Although many would applaud Janelle Monae for putting herself out there with this look from Ellie Saab, I just don’t see it. This looks like the aftermath of a Terminator and Marie Antoinette encounter (which would never happen, furthering my point) and THE BELT, oh, that belt looks so out of place. However, her makeup does look gorgeous, but this dress is just too much for me.

Halle Berry

There is just something about this Versace look that I do not like. From the black piece hanging from the assymetric draping at the top to the metallic fringe at the bottom, I feel like Halle Berry could’ve done so much better. Although, I do have to admit, she can definitely pull off the one-shoulder neckline. If only the rest of the dress could complement her as well.

Alicia Vikander

FilmMagic

I don’t know where to begin with this dress from Louis Vuitton…I am pretty sure high-low dresses were left back in 2013 alongside all of those ruffles. This dress looks like it belongs to Kiera Knightley’s character in Pirates of the Caribbean. From the cap sleeves to the black lace, this look is just not a winner in my eyes.

Ryan Gosling

Why, Ryan Gosling, WHY!? He would’ve looked so stunning in this Gucci look if he didn’t have those darn ruffles on his shirt. He looks like he came straight out of a 1980’s high school prom. C’mon Ryan… At least we can give him credit for leaving the cummerbund at home.

Sofia Boutella

FilmMagic

This Chanel couture look is just a plain no from me. The sparkle of the dress ends at such an awkward part of her body and those feathers just have to go. Since when were feathers back in style? And the hair…someone please tell this poor girl that she needs to double check her bangs before stepping on a red carpet. I feel like this look would’ve been so much better if the entire dress was the sparkly pattern and she didn’t have bangs. Maybe next year?

Pharell Williams

WireImage

Another disappointment from Chanel…From the stacking of the necklaces to the weird structure of the jacket, Pharrell could’ve done so much better. He even looks uncomfortable in this look. Also, why didn’t Ryan Gosling tell him that cummerbunds should be left at home?

Dakota Johnson

FilmMagic

I had so much hope for Dakota Johnson. She is just coming off a high of her latest movie, Fifty Shades Darker, doing an amazing job in theatres and she shows up in this Gucci look? I have to admit that she is probably my least favorite of the night because I know she could’ve done so much better. The color looks a little weird on her…and what is that bow over her crotch? Also the high neckline looks as if it is suffocating her and the hair just doesn’t work with this look. Sorry Dakota…
