MAJORS: POLITICAL SCIENCE AND GLOBAL STUDIES
WHAT ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ON CAMPUS?
“I am involved in Danceworks, Imani, and I work for the Sociology Department. I am throwing a flash mob for them later on in November.”
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DANCING?
“Actually, how I got into dancing was I was dancing at McHebes and Billy and Johnny [Cohen], the twin dance majors, came up to me and they were like, ‘Oh my god, you can actually dance, you should try out for Danceworks,’ and I was like, ‘No, dancing is just like something that I do in a club, it’s not like something I DO.’ So I went to the audition, and I had a lot of fun, and I got into actual pieces. It was love from there.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT DANCING?
“When you get to be on center stage and you’re just like you cant mess this up, you gotta do this, you’re in the middle. When you do it you know that people are cheering for you. Even though there are a lot of people up there, you still get a spotlight chance—and that is my favorite part.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN THE DANCEWORKS SHOW THIS WEEKEND?
“There is this senior girl named Nicki who is graduating this semester. She is the first freshman choreographer for Danceworks, and she has been doing hip hop since she has been here. This semester is her last hip hop piece, and I made it into that one. I love it; it’s like a reggae, ratchet type of dance and I get to do a back flip, which is like my thing. Every Danceworks show I have been in since I have gotten here I have done a back flip, so that’s the back flip piece for me this semester.”
DO YOU GET NERVOUS BEFORE YOU GO ON STAGE AND WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR MIND?
“Everytime, the moves from the dance. I am just trying really really hard not to mess anything up. Because when you’re up there, you’re not moving the whole time and someone has a solo and you get a break. During that break all I can think about is what is next.”
WHAT IS THE MOST EMBARRASSING THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE DANCING?“My friends and I got together the day I was about to ask this guy to prom and we made tear away jeans by cutting the seams and Velcroed them back together. I was going to wear booty shorts under the jeans that had Prom spelled on the butt. My friend brought this boom box to the bus loop after school, and I left Pokemon stuff all on his desk with notes telling him what to do. The last clue was to meet me at the bus loop, and I told all of my friends to tell their friends to hype it up so a huge crowd would be there. When I got there I wasn’t expecting anyone to show up, but there were 200 kids in the bus loop because they thought it was going to be a fight. I see him in the middle of the circle, and I go over to him and I start dancing and rip my pants off. It was really embarrassing; I probably would have turned red if my skin was not this pigmentation.”
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WHEN YOU GRADUATE?
“I want to be a lobbyist, preferably in Health Care Reform. But I am open to new possibilities. I didn’t really think about health care until this semester, so who knows what I will be thinking about next semester, but the plan is something along the lines of lobbying.”
