Beard Blog: Maxx Grass

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

While I may still be mouring about the end of Halloween festivities (only 355 days till next All Hallows Eve), at least the month of November does bring a tradition that I can get almost equally excited about. No Shave November, or Movember as some call it, is an annual month long event where men from around the world grow out their facial hair in support of men’s health issues like prostate cancer and depression in men. The Movember Foundation has advocated for men’s health since 2004 and have collected donations over the years to fund research for men’s health. This foundation is an excellent way to spread awareness about issues that often go unspoken but I speak for many females when I say that No Shave November benefits the ladies as well. Every time November rolls around, guys that I never would have noticed suddenly appear on my beard radar and as a beard-enthusiast, No Shave November lets me see where the real hotties have been hiding all semester.

Now let me be honest. Not all beards are created equal. As a woman who loves facial hair, I have experienced almost every single style during my dating career. There was the high school hookup who still rocks the chin strap (may our mistakes lay to rest). There was the summer fling with the guy who had a handlebar mustache, something that my friends will not let go to this day. When I got to college I dabbled with the guys with goatees, not before realizing that the holy grail of facial hair was the beard. Growing a beard takes commitment and it is something that requires time and patience. Not every guy is capable of growing a beard that is full but for those who can, they are winning at life.

I decided to do a little bit of investigation on Hofstra campus, to find the best beards to pin point these guy’s secrets to facial hair success and see if growing a beard really does change up a man’s game. I knew that the hunt wouldn’t be easy, because the game of beard growing has really just began for these guys who only let it grow after Halloween has come and gone. But I had hope that a valiant few would emerge from the shadows and be willing to share their tricks of the trade for boldly bearding it for the long haul. Let’s hear what class of 2017 Journalism major, Maxx Grass has to say about the facial hair he has been sporting this semester.

HC: When did you decide to grow a beard?

MG: That would have been when I was a child. I saw my dad’s beard and I instantly thought “I want to grow a beard too”. And now that I can grow a beard and he has trouble growing a beard, I feel like I’m now the man of the house.

HC: What is your beard maintenance routine?

MG: I comb it several times a day. I shampoo it, treat it like it’s the hair on my head.

HC: Who is your celebrity beard crush?

MG: Chris Hemsworth has a nice beard.

HC: Do you think that your beard makes you a chick magnet?

MG: I’ve been told so, but I’m not going to speak for them.
