5 Ways to Make Your Dorm Cozy for the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

One of the best ways to stave off the winter blues is to come home from classes or work, kick off those fur-lined boots, and just relax in your dorm. But if you’re surrounded by blank walls, or if it suddenly feels like your summery décor is mocking you, you’ve got to make some changes. Try these five easy ways to make your dorm cozy for the winter, and you’ll be looking forward to the next time you get snowed in.

1. String up holiday lights on the walls. Lots of students keep the look year-round, but it’s especially apt for this time of year—and the warm, comforting glow will make up for the fact that the sun went down before you even got out of class.

2. Pile on those blankets! Use both color and texture to your advantage here. Warm colors like yellow, orange, and red will make you forget the grey weather, while cable-knit or wool blankets will look and feel like your favorite comfortable sweater.

3. Buy a fuzzy rug, bean bag, ottoman, etc. A rug makes it easier to get out of bed with bare feet on freezing mornings, and the furniture pieces make cozy havens for you to sink into at the end of the day. Whatever your choice is, just make it super-soft!

4. Decorate your walls with washi tape. Rolls of washi tape are easy to apply, easy to remove, and come in tons of different colors and patterns. Use your imagination—create fun geometric designs, spell out an inspiring quote, or get in the holiday spirit and create Christmas trees, menorahs, snowflakes, or wreaths – the possibilities are endless!

5. Bake! What’s a better way to cozy up on cold winter nights than to make (and snack on) your favorite warm, ooey-gooey baked goods? Set out a festive plate in your lounge, or keep a decorated tin in your room. (Doesn’t the snow look so much more enticing when it’s on a cookie?)
