How To Start Your 2020 Fitness Journey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hawaii chapter.

It’s almost February of 2020, and everyone’s been talking about their New Year resolutions and how 2020 is going to change their life. Well, there’s so much more to accomplish your goals than posting and talking about it. Among these resolutions, fitness or your overall well being is at the top of 2020 resolutions.

Accountability, discipline, and consistency are keys to achieving goals.

Some people struggle because of the lack of knowledge when working toward their goals.

I’m here to give the steps I would take to approach my 2020 fitness goals and healthy life.

I also will put some “unpopular truths” that are critical but constructive.

Disclaimer: I’m not a professional. I’m just a college student trying to be healthy, enjoy the island (free time) and graduate while taking ridiculously hard classes.

So grab a pen a paper— not popcorn— because you’re going to want to follow this.

Hopefully, you have heard this before, but you must find a balance. So basically, this is all about balance, but I understand entirely how school and life are so unpredictable; therefore, balance doesn’t mean you got yo sh** solely together. I also believe that balance does mean sacrificing some things because you genuinely can’t have everything, but setting aside time will help you find time for it throughout the week. Like you can’t go to school, finish homework, go to the beach and work in one day. We wish we could.

Okay, let’s start this.

Start with buying a journal and a planner.

You’re tracking two different lives, so get an academic/life planner and a fitness journal.

The Planner- You want a planner with time slots, usually long hours. I started using the PassionPlanner, and let me tell you it’s a game-changer. It holds you accountable for your goals you plan yearly and monthly.

The Journal- find something fun and enthusiastic! Filled with quotes, colors, motivation, etc. you want to track your weight, workouts, meals, and MOOD. It should be a reflection on your mood because that is what will keep you going.

You can also use a lined journal and create it yourself.

With this journal, the primary step is to determine your goals.

Here are a few:

  • Gain muscle mass
  • Lose fat
  • Eat more veggies
  • Learn how to count macros
  • Grow my glutes and hamstrings
  • Grow my biceps and back
  • Say no to the cookie
  • Say yes to the cookie
  • Be healthier
  • A healthier relationship with the gym or food

Your goal is your personal choice and let no one from outside of your heart choose it for you.

This leads me to the next optional but smart tip…

Unfollow the people you want to look like.

Unpopular truth: you’re not going to look like your celeb crush because you guys are TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. You guys are biologically different, and you are not her for a reason. In 2020, everyone should stop trying to look like someone and instead focus on themselves.

Unfollow the Kardashians, Gigi Hadid, Alexis Ren… and those other people. I’m sorry, I can’t even remember more names because I unfollowed them and forgot about them.

There’s no point in following them because if you really think about it (social media is dangerous) when you are scrolling around, you are judging people and whether or not they’re good enough to like. I’m sorry, but I just don’t believe in that, so I deleted every celebrity unless they have a positive message.

I follow major athletes from the U.S. Women’s Soccer team because they are full of strong queens. #LFG

Follow people whose mindset inspires you. Not someone whose body inspires you.

I highly recommend following people who are in the same field as your major, who give insightful tips on how to succeed in life.

So instead of following money betting celebrities, I’ll give you a few inspiring women to follow:

@kiahmfit (100% all the way- so inspiring)

@stef_fit

@soheefit

@suzie_kb

@taychayy

For your mental health:

@thingsandreasays

@the.holistic.psychologist

Or, you could go on a social media cleanse.

Next, Nutrition

Many people say that your goals are achieved in the kitchen 80% of the time while the other 20% is in the gym.

Become knowledgeable about the food your body needs to function

Find a nutritionist!

Or, take the time to use credible online resources to find information about what you need to eat.

There are three ways to “diet” and it’s your personal preference

  • Gain weight- to build muscle and add weight
  • Recompose- lose fat and gain muscle
  • Lose fat- losing weight/shedding fat

Just because Whitney Simmons ate “insert her meal” for lunch doesn’t mean that’s what you need to eat and fit your lifestyle.

BUY MCT OIL!! It’s incredible for brain health.

Workouts! Gym!

The girls instagram I posted share FULL workouts that you can follow.

Designate your days to muscle groups.

For example:

Mondays: Quads and Calves

Tuesday: Back and Biceps

Wednesday: Hamstrings and Glutes

Thursday: Tricep, Chest, and Shoulders

Friday: Full body leg or upper body focus

That’s my split. Do what works for you.

Go to the gym with a plan because if you don’t, then you may have a poor workout and end up walking out.

If you are a beginner, don’t focus on weight. Focus on your form because that will prevent injury. Your form is so important. Soheefit posts many videos on how to perform exercises correctly.

Find something you enjoy or else you could plateau.

Measurements and progress pictures will be your bff.

Do not rely on your peers or the scale to tell you whether your body has changed.

Do not seek outside validation.

Gym Intimidation.

  1. People will stare, but you shouldn’t care about what people think of you.
  2. You are there to better yourself and not them.
  3. If they care about you while they’re at the gym, then they have issues and need to go home.
  4. If you run away from the gym because you are scared, then you are never going to accomplish your goals.
  5. Everyone had to start somewhere; someone was once you. You will get there with time and patience.

Put your music on, own it and you do you boo.

Attire. What to wear.

Dress right to feel good. Wear something comfortable and not something that you are self-conscious wearing.

Your workout depends on how you feel, so go in feeling good!

I highly recommend Lulu or paragon and some supportive shoes.

Headphones.

  • AirPods all the way
  • Beats powerbeats

I love my Beat Studios, but I don’t recommend working out with them.

  1. They get dirty
  2. They are not sweat proof
  3. They’re too expensive to ruin them with 1 and 2.

Develop a routine

If you develop a routine, then you are most likely to follow it.

Your goal is to be consistent and work hard. Do it for yourself.

To end this, I will put some of my favorite quotes.

“No better day than today.”

“If not today, then when?”

“Be a unicorn in a field of horses.”

Commit to yourself.
