All You Need to Know About Sex Week with Amelia Lamp

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Harvard chapter.

How many years has Sex Week been done at Harvard?

This was the 6th annual sex week.

What is the purpose or goal of Sex Week?

The purpose of sex week is to destigmatize the conversations we have about sex, sexuality and gender, and to create a safe space to facilitate that.

What is your role in Sex Week?

I am co-president of SHEATH (Sexual Health Education and Advocacy Throughout Harvard College), the group that runs sex week, along with Lita Peña.

How did you get involved with Sex Week?

I have been involved in SHEATH since last February, when one of my blockmates forwarded their recruitment email on to me.

What is your favourite Sex Week lecture?

I can’t really pick a favorite activity that we have had. Since we do a variety of different types of events, from small facilitated discussions to larger lecture style presentations, it’s really hard to pick just one.

How do topics vary year to year?

The topics for events varies year to year depending on what the members of the organization want to focus on. This year we had events on faith and sexuality, the Kamasutra, queer shyness, condom fit, and a variety of others

What are the most popular Sex Week lectures?

The lecture that our partner Good Vibrations puts on called Sex Toys 101 always pulls a large crowd. Our Sex Ed 101 with a presenter from Planned Parenthood also had a great attendance.

What kind of sex positive freebees do you have at lectures?

We have a bunch of great supplies for everyone at each event. We always have tons of condoms and lube from our amazing sponsors, as well as a large variety of sex toys donated by some of our sponsors. This year we also got a great donation from FC2, a female condom company.

What feedback have you gotten from other students about Sex Week?

People really love coming to our events. We often hear that we are exposing people to new things that they never had the chance to learn about before, and that we create a fun and safe place for people to begin to understand and explore their own ideas about sex, sexuality and gender. We try to use as much feedback as we can to try to make Sex Week the best that we can.

Any funny or interesting experiences?

I can’t really think of a specific funny experience. I can say that some of the most rewarding moments are when people come up to us at events and thank us for putting on Sex Week because they never had the freedom to learn about sex and sexuality and gender in their life up until now. It just reinforces why I love being a part of this organization.

Anything you’d like to add?

I also want to thank our co-sponsors from this year which include Harvard College Women’s Center, Harvard Queer Students and Allies, and Office of BGLTQ Student Life and our coporate partners:

Lelo, PicoBong, OhMiBod, Cal Exotics & Jopen, Je Joue, Good Vibrations Brookline Store, Minna Life, ONE Condoms, Tenga Global, Tantus, Inc., Crystal Delights, Sportsheets, Lovehoney, FC2 The Female Condom, and Jimmy Jane.
