This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

This week’s Greek is Ayanna Maxwell! Ayanna is a sophomore Strategic-Communications Major from Baltimore, MD. On campus, Ayanna is the Editor-in-Chief of the Hampton Script and is a member of Campus Curlz Incorporated. Ayanna is a proud Spring 2018 initiate of the Gamma Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated. She spends her free time hanging out with friends, listening to music and online shopping. Read more to learn about this lovely lady.

HC: Describe how it felt when you first crossed.

AM: It was just an adrenaline rush. It just felt so unreal.

HC: What made you choose Alpha Kappa Alpha?

AM: Well first, my stepmom is an Alpha Kappa Alpha, so I was surrounded by them growing up. Their principles align with what I stand for, like classiness but still being able to give back. I also take pride in it being the first African-American Sorority.

HC: Did you learn anything about yourself during the intake process for your organization?

AM: I learned to not underestimate yourself, there’s nothing you can’t handle. I also learned patience and cooperation because there are 60 girls on my line. At the end of the day, we are all one unit, we are all one sisterhood, so I just learned how to love each of my sister’s individually and as a whole.

HC: How has your first week as an Alpha woman been?

AM: My social life went from 0 to 100. I’ve always been a chill, low-key type of person and it’s just weird to have people want to talk to you and know your name. Not saying that I was completely unknown before, but I’m meeting new people every day. It still hasn’t hit me all the way, just little by little each day.

HC: Who is your role model?

AM: This might sound cliche, but honestly, Beyonce. She has every right to be cocky but she’s really humble, gives back, down to Earth, and she’s a feminist. She represents women empowerment to the fullest.

HC: How do you balance your academics, social life, and extra-curricular activities?

AM: I use a planner. Also, the reminders app on my phone is like my BFF. Without my reminders app, I would probably forget to wake up in the morning. I have 50 billion things going on in my head at a time, but I just try to keep myself grounded and organized.

HC: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

AM: Probably Hawaii. I haven’t been there so I don’t know exactly how the living situation is, but just from the outside looking in, it looks like a great place to be. I love tropical places, places with beaches and sun, a place where you can just be happy all the time. That’s where I want to be.

HC: Where do you feel the most at peace?

AM: In my room, by myself. When you’re alone and you have to just breathe, that’s where I feel the calmest.

HC: Are you currently binge-watching any new shows on Netflix?

AM: I just finished watching Seven Seconds. It’s a terrible situation, but it really exposes the reality of the criminal justice system. That show is just great, I highly recommend it.

HC: Name one cosmetic/hair product that you can’t exist without.

AM: Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie. That’s what keeps my curls defined and on-point. I don’t know how I ever lived without it.

HC: Do you have any summer goals?

AM: I wanna have fun, but still look more into my strategic communications field and try to figure out what I want to do with that after graduation. And make money, I’m trying to have jobs.

HC: What are your plans after graduation?

AM: I’m still trying to figure it out. I wanna get a good, well-paying job. And I want to be able to travel and make memories with my family and friends.
