Black Girl’s Guide to Self Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Black girls have always been beautiful, intelligent, resilient, and magical. We’ve persevered through the hardest situations, and have overcome so many adversities. We’ve had to learn how to love ourselves in a world that treats us as though we’re nothing. We’ve had to tell ourselves that we are more than our wide hips, big butts, and full lips. When society told us that we were unintelligent, we’ve had to remind ourselves that we are our ancestors wildest dreams. It’s not always easy to constantly love ourselves when society over sexualizes and dehumanizes us, but have no fear because Her Campus is here to take you on a journey of self love.

As black women we often forget how important it is to love ourselves, and we’re always so busy being great that we never practice self care. Self care is so important when it comes learning to love yourself. One of the most important things about self care is realizing that you deserve it. It’s completely okay to take the weight of the world off your shoulders, and do what makes you happy. Try taking a nice hot bath, lighting some candles and meditating, or just relax and listen to your favorite music.

Unfortunately today’s society constantly over sexualizes black women. Even in music videos it’s common to see black women with large breast and big butts dancing across the screen, but all black women aren’t shaped like that. Remember that while you’re on this journey to self love, that there is no one else like you. It’s okay if you aren’t shaped like the girls in the music videos, and magazines. You should wake up every morning and remind yourself that you are beautiful because all black women are. This journey to self love is not an easy one. It may take a while for you to fall completely in love with yourself but when you do it will be worth it. Remember that you are beautiful and no one can dim your light. Self love for black women is crucial because this world doesn’t always love us.

Just a black girl who's constantly flourishing.
