For fourth-year Amanda Lisia, an International Affairs major, ensuring she stays intact with her regular self-care ritual is crucial to how she goes about the week. “I would say I try my best to stick to my usual self-care routine and give myself lenience when I fall off track. I tend not to schedule many commitments during finals, so I don’t feel forced to go anywhere or disappoint people when I can’t make it to plans because I didn’t stick to my studying schedule,” Lisi said. Lisi shared that she takes time off work during the heavier workload weeks to prioritize studying and final assignments.
Setting priorities together is crucial when creating a study and rest schedule. Many students find having itemized itineraries in a physical planner or a Google Calendar is helpful. Especially when it comes to scheduling work, class, and other extra curriculars, navigating a steady schedule is crucial to ensuring everything gets completed while taking care of yourself!Â
“I make sure I get good sleep. I try to do activities with friends to destress. I usually go on walks and have lunches. Organize your to-do list by prioritizing things by day. That usually works for me. Also, make sure to have time for yourself. Remember, grades do matter, but they are not the only things that matter in life,” shared fourth-year Stephanie Berthin, a Computer Science and Business Analytics major.Â
Third-year Anhai Roantree, a Creative Writing major, shared how her need to start a self-care routine is crucial as she prepares for her finals this semester. “Honestly, I’m bad at taking care of myself around finals and trying to get better. I like to try to spend time in the sun (during spring finals, because it’s warm), like studying or reading outside! I get very stressed around finals, but in the past, writing out daily schedules has helped me feel more on top of things,” Roantree shared. By reflecting on how to get better at scheduling her time, Roantree has created a system of rest and care that works for her.
During finals season, I like to make sure I take breaks between writing essays. I personally love to cook more for my roommates and me so that we get a chance to wind down before hitting the books again! I also take this time to really utilize my planner and pay attention to deadlines and due dates. Staying organized is key to making sure everything gets done promptly while also making space to take time off.
Students during finals season have a very different way of going into it. While it takes some time, hopefully, the suggestions of your peers can help you navigate this time with rest, reflection, and responsibility. Whether studying at a Gelman study room or walking near the Potomac, take care of yourself and your well-being this finals season!Â
