An Open Letter To My Long Distance Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Guelph chapter.

I remember the first time I met you like the back of my hand, we were both being extremely obnoxious and trying to figure out where the campus bar was (because obviously that was the most important spot). In that moment, I knew you were going to be my best friend and there is no one else I would rather be that obnoxious with.

You are the type of friend that makes me laugh until I cry, shares my insane love for coffee, travel, food, friends and shopping and the type of friend that will drop everything to make sure I’m ok.

You were the person I could always count on to be up for a drink at the end of a long day or to stop everything you were doing because I needed someone to talk to. You became family.

You have helped my step outside of my comfort zone, you allowed me to laugh a little harder, love a little stronger and explore a little more. You helped me grow as a person; into someone who can appreciate getting lost because it always leads to some place beautiful and unexpected, to laugh at myself and not take life too seriously and to be extremely dramatic just because you can and it makes everything funnier.

I thank the universe daily for bringing a person like you into my life.  Even though I can’t be at your house in 5 minutes or force you into making poor decisions with me anymore, I wouldn’t trade our friendship for anything.

Thank you for keeping my time zone on your phone so you don’t call me while I’m sleeping and for always texting me updates on your life so I still feel connected.

Thank you for sharing your friends from home with me so I feel like I am a part of your world even from across the world.

Thank you for sending me pictures of your daily adventures and your home life so I never feel like I’m missing something in your life.

Thank you for picking up every late night phone calls, answering every unnecessary text and never failing to put a smile on my face on the worst days. Even with a 14-hour time difference you never hesitate to listen to my irrelevant rants and offer your best advice.

You are the only person I would travel 23 hours for.

Sincerely,

Your long distance best friend
