Gamma Rho: Fall 2015

Why did you choose Sigma Gamma Rho?

NB: Honestly, at first I was not interested in Greek life. At the time when I first transferred to Georgia State, my mom was in the process of getting back active. My mom is a Sigma Gamma Rho so I’m legacy. She invited me to lots of events, and in 2015 I met two Sigma Gamma Rho’s from Georgia State at my mom’s chapter’s super bowl party. I got their info and over the summer these two called to check up on me. I just felt so welcomed when I went to meet the Greeks, I just remember thinking “This is so me!”

What makes this sisterhood special to you?

NB: I’ve always wanted a sister. I only had a little brother, but I had been in all girls sports teams but still didn’t have that many friends. I wanted a more welcoming feeling as a transfer student. I think that’s what makes my sorority different, everyone is just so welcoming. Nothing is forced with me and my sisters, it’s a natural bond we share.

Did you think you’d become a member of Sigma Gamma Rho?

NB: Honestly no, I always had Greek coaches and teachers, but it was never something I was interested in. I joined Sigma Gamma Rho because of those two girls, they were just so welcoming. Everything was just so genuine.

What’s one moment you would relive with sorority?

NB: The week after my probate. Me and my line sisters went to parties, and took random road trips. The first was to Valdosta State, because Kappa Alpha Psi had their probate. It was so much fun and I got to see my friend cross too! I think the road trip was so fun because it was random and spontaneous. The spontaneous moments are the best moments, especially in your undergrad college years.

How has being in Sigma Gamma Rho impacted your college experience?

NB: Joining any Greek is a great networking tool. I’ve gotten jobs just for being a member of my sorority. And I’ve met so many different people. Just being able to call one of my sisters to vent about anything is the best. I always have someone close to me.

What type of legacy do you want Sigma Gamma Rho to leave at Georgia State?

NB: A personal legacy I’ve been working on is getting us more out there. Participating in more things on campus, and collaborating with other organizations. I did a Miss Omega Psi Phi pageant the semester after I crossed and actually got third place! I want more people to participate like that. The legacy I’m trying to put on is to allow people the opportunity to branch out, and put our name out there.
