Graduation: It’s Okay Not to Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

It’s almost the end of the fall semester, which means quite a few of us are preparing to graduate in December. We’ve been craving for the end of our academic careers since we started our freshman year. The dream of no longer having to stay up late to finish papers, study for exams, or stress about final grades is finally approaching. Aside from that newfound freedom comes several fears that many of us are going to face once we get that diploma in our hands. The fear of having to be functional adults.

Once you walk across that stage, your life begins. No more late nights stuffing your face with pizza with your roommates. No more rushing to class because you overslept. You’ll have to actually start cooking or learning how if you don’t know already. Sweats can no longer be your go-to outfit of choice because now we’re going to have to start looking a little more presentable. Let’s not forget the stress of job hunting because let’s face it; most of us will not have a job waiting for us after graduation.

This is the start of a new adventure for you. It’s alright to feel a little lost, overwhelmed, or scared. You’ve completed one chapter and another one is about to begin. This is the freedom that we’ve all yearned for since high school. College gave you a taste of what it is like to actually be on your own and be responsible but now you’re being kicked into overdrive. It’s perfectly fine to not have everything all figured out. There are still some veteran adults who are wandering around, trying to find their path.

Now, this also means making sure that your résumé is nice and polished. LinkedIn is going to become a good resource for you to connect with potential employers since it’s like a giant résumé by itself. Work on your interviewing skills as well. Job hunting can be scary but it’s the first step toward making your life what you want it to be. Also keep in mind that your first job will most likely not be your dream job or job you’ll necessarily love. You should also invest in some business clothes if you don’t have some already. Remember: You’ve got to look the part when on the prowl for a new job.

Be happy and excited for yourself. You are graduating college and not everyone can say they had the opportunity to do that. Be proud of what you’ve learned and accomplished. Just because you’re finished with school doesn’t mean you’re done learning. Always take the time to keep yourself educated and informed. Read all the time, write all the time, and be open-minded to the world around you. Go forth and take control of the beast we call life.
