Campus Celebrity: Meet Miss Georgia State University Jamika ‘Mika’ King

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

Name: Jamika “Mika” King

Major: Nursing Major Spanish Minor

Year: May 2016

Hometown: Augusta, GA

Her Campus: You graduate in May, how are you feeling about your last semester?

JK: It doesn’t feel different yet, but when I start thinking about getting jobs and things like that it makes me a little bit nervous. However, I know that nursing is a secure job, so I’m trying not to stress about it. I’m just trying to have as much fun as possible, honestly. My classes aren’t too hard, so my goal is to take advantage of everything that is going on and really enjoy the moment.

But I can’t lie; I’m going be sad to leave GSU. I hope I’m not one of those people who come back to plaza ALL THE TIME but I’m afraid, I might be. I’m going to take classes in the summer so hopefully that will give me a little bit more time to get stuff together. Overall though, I am excited and ready to go but I know I’m going to miss it here.

HC: What are you doing to make sure that this semester is the best one yet?

JK: So, my new year’s resolution is “No Stress 2016”. So when I feel myself worked up, overwhelmed, in my feelings, or whatever it is, I just try to take time more for myself. I’m trying to learn how to meditate and enjoy every second I have left. I’m just starting to realize that May is just around the corner, so the countdown has begun!

HC: Looking back over your years here at GSU, what have you been involved with over the years?

JK:  My freshman year I was in Quiet Storm Steppers, from there I became the treasurer and eventually a mentor for QSS. I became a Senator for SGA. I was inducted as a member Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and eventually became Co-President. I was a programmer and mentor for The LEAD team. I’ve done Panther Breakaway. I am currently the Senior RA for Patton Hall and last year I was an RA for the Honors Floor. I am Miss Phi Beta Sigma for the Pi Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and for the state of Georgia. I am a 1913 Society Ambassador. I am Miss Georgia State University. I am the Secretary of the Enchanting Eta Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. And I’ve done a lot of volunteer work on and around campus. {chuckles} I hope I got everything.

HC: What is your favorite memory of your college career?

JK: My favorite memory was when I got accepted to Nursing school. I was living in the Commons but I had my decision letter sent to Augusta because I didn’t want anything crazy to happen; like it getting lost or anything like that. So, it took a little bit longer for me to get news.  I was with Jordan and my parents called me. My dad was talking and said “There are some times in life where you have to accept defeat…. But I’m glad to tell this Is not one of those times. You got accepted into Nursing school.”

I was sobbing, like uncontrollably crying because it was such a big deal and I was a Sophomore. That was my biggest memory because it opened a new a door for me. Since I was in high school I’ve been saying that I wanted to be a nurse and I wanted to go to Georgia State University and people were always telling me, “That is impossible. Nobody gets into the program.” And then I finally opened the door that so many people said was impossible to open. It just let me know that there is nothing after this that I can’t do. Because as long as I put my mind to it, some effort, and have support from my family and friends, nothing can stop me. That was my most important and most memorable moment because that really set the standard for everything to follow.

HC: What has been your biggest accomplishment of your college career?

JK: The biggest accomplishment of my college career is finally feeling like I became the person I’ve wanted to be and left the legacy that I wanted to leave. I have had other young women look up to me and say “I want to be just like you”. At first I just thought of it as a large weight to carry, that my every move is being watched but then I realized that means I did what I wanted to do. I did what I came here for. I didn’t just come go to class and go home. I came here to do something for our community and GSU and I touched somebody to do the same.

HC: What are your goals after graduation?

JK:  To never be stagnant. I am really afraid of going to work and going home. I still want to be making a difference in my community. Also, my personal goal is to become healthy and lose weight.

HC: Everyone around campus calls you “super sweet” and so “nice”? How does it feel to know that your personality is so liked around campus?

JK: Wow, I didn’t know that! This is the first time I’ve heard that; it really makes me happy! I’m honored that I give people that impression. I am always nervous that my face is saying otherwise but I want everyone to know I am accessible, friendly, and fun.

HC: Who has been your biggest influences and role models from GSU?

JK: Well there have been so many. But off the top of my head it would have to be…Ajahn Richards. She always has this sweet and bubbly vibe. I love her personality. Also I love how she made an impact and made a legacy while being true to herself, that is really important to me. Also, Kareem Alexis. Kareem was my RA when I was a freshman. He was the 4th floor RA in Patton Hall and now I’m the RA on the 4th floor in Patton Hall and I just think that is so funny. Since I was a freshman, he moved me to do more on campus. He was involved on campus and very academically successful. He made an impact and it’s crazy because he didn’t even talk a whole lot but everything he said meant a lot and had a lot of substance to it. There are many more people who have made an impact on me during my time here; these are just the first 2 that come to mind right off.

HC: You date our Campus Cutie, Jordan Campbell, how long have you two been together?

JK: 2 years and 8 months as of 2/4/16… officially. We’ve been talking for longer than that.

HC: What are 3 words you would use to describe you two’s relationship?

JK:  True love, that is the only way we could put up with each other for so long. True friendship and support. We’re true friends; who are truly in love; who always support each other.

HC: What is the foundation of you and Jordan’s relationship?

JK: Knowing each other’s likes and dislikes and being able to understand each other even better than we know ourselves. Jordan knows me better than I know myself. Us knowing who we are as individuals and us knowing each other so well, has helped us grow both individually and within our relationship. But by knowing each other so well and fostering a relationship to who we are as individuals really gives us a good foundation. We are really in tune with each other. And have unconditional love. We never stop loving each other, no matter how much chill Jordan lacks. [laughs]

HC: How do you balance school, being so involved, and a relationship?

JK: Prioritize. He knows when I have important things to do such as nursing school and when some activities are not as important then I make sure I am spending time with him. We both are really selfish and we want each other’s attention as much as possible. But we know how to balance that with our priorities because we want each other to excel before anything else.

HC: What is you favorite thing about Jordan?

JK: I really like that he laughs at my jokes. Like I know… well I think that they’re funny, but I know the greater population doesn’t think that they are always funny. But he always laughs, every time.

HC: Do you any advice for new couples on how to last?

JK: Have somebody that wants the best for you, the way you want it for yourself. He pushes me and I push him. So regardless of what you want to do, you’ll always want to have somebody there that wants the best for you the same way you want it for yourself, especially during those hard times.
