5 Tips From A Lost College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

I don’t know where the notion came from that us 18 to 20 somethings are supposed to have it all figured out when it’s the absolute opposite. Once you leave high school, you’re forced to make an overwhelming amount of decisions like whether to choose to between college or going straight to the workforce. If you pick a college, you’re then left with the choice of what school, what major, and what to possibly do with yourself once you graduate. It’s hard enough to figure out what you want for dinner that night. Well if you’re still reading this, at least you’ve gotten through one step, and you should be proud. You picked a school to further your education for the next four years and that being Georgia State!

When coming in as a freshman, you may think you have it figured all out; but let me tell you, you don’t, and that’s ok! Your first year of school is for self-exploration, so don’t beat yourself up for a mistake or two. Being in a new place can be scary and exciting. And being the new kid again after working so hard to gain that senior respect, is gone out the window. So I know it’s hard to start over. But here are a few things I’ve learned in my first semester at school to help ease into what can be some of the greatest tears of your life!

1.    Be Yourself

Beginning college is a fresh slate. No one knows the person you were in high school and have no predisposed perception of you. You really could be anyone you want to be, but being your true self is the easiest option (faking it can easily be seen through). Don’t be afraid to be unapologetically yourself; there is someone out there that will appreciate you for you!

2.    Get out of your comfort zone

College can be this best time of your life, but it is entirely up to you to do it. Don’t let fear get in the way of anything you want to do. Do you want to take all honors classes? Do it!  Do you want to join that club? Do it!  Do you want to start a conversation with that guy? DO IT, GIRL!  College is a great time for self-exploration and getting to know your adult self. So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try something new! You’ll regret all the chances you missed out on.

3.    Enjoy your freedom…but not too much

For some, this is their first time being away from home. At college, there aren’t any rules like at home. You’re considered an adult now, so take this newfound freedom and run with it! There is always something to do on campus and around the city. However, too much of anything can’t be good for you. So don’t party too much. If it starts to affect your school work or health, just know it’s time to take a step back. It is possible to have a great social life and good grades! It just takes hard work and dedication.

4. Go to Class

Please allow me to repeat this…go to class! You pay thousands of dollars to attend this institution, so it is in your best interest to use it wisely. Going to class ensures that you won’t miss any vital information, and allows you to do your best this first year of school. Being up too late the previous night watching Netflix isn’t an excuse to miss class. Some professors even deduct points off of final grades if you miss too many classes. Even if you’re dead tired, you’ll feel much better about yourself after attending class.

5. You’re Mental Health is Important!

My last and most important tip are to always pay attention to the state of your mental health. If you’re starting to feel like you are becoming overwhelmed, stressed, or depressed, don’t be afraid to talk to a friend or even counselor’s here at GSU! Like I said earlier college can be a tough time and sometimes hard to navigate. While trying to juggle all these new responsibilities, sometimes your mental health begins to take a toll. No matter what, your health comes first, and we want you to be at your best at all times!
