An Open Letter to a Friend Going Through a Break-Up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gonzaga chapter.

IT GETS BETTER

To my friend, whether I’ve known you for a few months or a few years,

I’m writing you this to let you know that everything is going to be okay.  I know it’s cliché, but it’s true.  Even though everything in life might seem to be falling apart, I can promise you that when we build it back up together, it will be more beautiful than it was before.  You are still loved and needed by so many people in your life, and you’ll always be able to find a friend in me.

The questions you are asking yourself are the worst to imagine. “Why wasn’t I good enough?” or “What could I have done differently?”.  I know it hurts. The first heartbreak always does, but that does not mean you are broken.  Everyday, you are still growing and becoming a better person than you were the day before, even when the one you loved stopped.  Take time to breathe and know that even as your life is beginning to change in ways you never saw coming, goodness always comes out of something hard.  A break-up is meant to teach you that this love wasn’t meant to be and maybe that means you were saved from being with the wrong person in the end.  Life is full of change, sometimes not in the way we planned.  I know it’s hard to understand, and that’s okay.  I’ll help you through it.

Take this time to find out who you are.  A break up is meant to help you find out what you truly want in a relationship, so use this time to find out what that is.  Learn about yourself.  Grow in confidence, self-love, and knowledge of who you are.  The only way you can truly love someone else is to love yourself first.  It will take a few tries before you finally get it right, but I can promise you that you will thank yourself for taking this time to lead you to a happier life.

I hope you know that it hurts me to see you this way and all I want is for you to know that I will always be there for you.  You are so loved. I want the very best for you and for you to find your own happiness. You deserve it.

Love, someone who wants only the best for you.
