A few weeks ago, Kanye West appeared on Saturday Night Live where he followed his performance with an impromptu speech where he stated his support for Donald Trump and other political statements. Kanye also stated that he was not taking his medication for his bipolar personality disorder. Most of the Saturday Night Live cast were obviously suprised by this, some even snuck off of the stage during. SNL’s own Pete Davidson later made a statement recognizing the dangers in stopping medication and how unproductive that is towards an individual’s mental health. Although what Kanye has said in instances like these (there’s been a few) can be very ignorant, it makes a point that mental health is something that everyone is affected by and it is incredibly important to take care of.

Mental health was something that took me years to acknowledge and take care of. After struggling throughout freshman year, I finally took time to sit down with a counselor and talk about my anxiety. I think that therapy and counseling is something that most people can benefit from. University health centers are there to offer support and if talking about the stress you’re feeling – this is a great way to help.

If you are not interested in taking medication to help your mental health, there are also some good vitamins and minerals that can help your body get back to homeostasis. Besides that, important routines and practices can help your mental state. Whether this is a good skin care routine or an artistic outlet, having something to organize and improve your life is necessary to helping your mental health struggles.

With October 10th being mental health awareness day, remember to spend time on improving your wellbeing throughout your busy life; it is okay to ask for help.
