Don’t get me wrong, college is amazing! But sometimes it can feel like we’re stuck in a bubble and are isolated from the the rest of the world; especially on a residential medium-sized campus such as Gonzaga. I feel that students sometimes forget what is actually beyond university property!
As a current sophomore living in an apartment, I have begun feeling more independent and eager to explore what Spokane (beyond GU) has to offer. So, if you ever feel like you need a break from the life of a college student and want to temporarily escape the “bubble”, here is what I suggest:
1. Wander around downtown
Last weekend, I went downtown to do homework but I didn’t have a specific place in mind before I got there. I ended up sitting down, ordering coffee, and doing homework for about an hour at a coffee shop called Indaba Coffee. I had been wanting to try Indaba for quite some time, but just never got around to it. After spending some time there, I decided to wander down a few blocks and check out Auntie’s Bookstore. WOW, I honestly feel that this is a hidden gem as far as bookstores go. Even the architecture of the building is amazing! See, after a little mindless wandering on a Sunday afternoon, you can discover super cool new places that you can go to again and again.
2. Go on a hike (when the weather permits)
Check out River Side State Park and go for a nice hike around Bowl and Pitcher! All of this is only about a 20 minute drive from campus!
3. Take a short road trip
Some of my favorite college memories (so far) include those made while being in a car for three hours with two of my close friends. We drove from Spokane to Missoula, MT to spend the long weekend at my friend’s house. The memories that were made both in my friend’s hometown and on that road trip are some that I will remember forever!
4. Find a nice coffee shop to do homework at
There are so many good coffee shops in Spokane, just pick one! We even have an article about them HERE!
5. Treat yourself to a mall day
Yes, we may be in college, but every once in a while, everyone needs to go on a shopping spree! Even if all you buy is a cute cell phone case, I’m sure you will have fun at the mall with your friends.
If you ever feel like you’re stuck in “the bubble,” I encourage you to get out and explore everything that Spokane and the neighboring areas have to offer!
