We can all identify with the feeling of pure, overwhelming joy and excitement when a letter arrives in the mail addressed in your name.

It is one thing to open your mailbox and be overwhelmed with bills, junk mail, and unwarranted advertisements, however, it is a completely different entity being greeted by a colorful envelope with your name written boldly on the front; the promise of well wishes, sincere gratitude, or a birthday surprise enclosed.

Receiving a letter in the mail has the power to brighten anyone’s day.

I was raised to appreciate the influence and meaningfulness of a hand written letter, and the power that “snail mail” has over the fast paced means of communication in the 21st century.

On my fourth birthday, after the festivities had ended, the gifts had been opened, and the magician disappeared in his final act, my parents sat me down, a jumbo Crayola marker in hand, in front of a stack of thank you letters my mom had written on my behalf. It was my job to write my name, to the best of the abilities of a preschooler, before my parents licked the envelopes shut and sent them on their way. One by one, my hand, tightly gripping the colorful marker, scribbled my name, letter by letter, following the sincere thank you note written.

My father has always preached the importance of a hand written thank you letter, as it is a simple gesture which has the power to change “everything” (or so he says). The lessons of the importance of hand written letters were engrained in me from a young age, and have stayed with me throughout my teenage years, and ultimately, into my adulthood.

Most importantly, in my opinion, hand written letters showcases your care, love and appreciation for the recipient goes far beyond a few characters sent and received on a small screen.
