Table For One: The Art of The Solo Date

For most of us, the idea of doing things completely alone can feel a little terrifying at first. Sitting at a crowded brunch spot, buying a single ticket to a Friday night movie, or wandering through an art gallery by yourself all come with that nagging feeling that fun requires a plus one. The thought of walking into a restaurant and saying, “Just one, please,” can make you feel like everyone is staring.

Spoiler alert: nobody is looking at you!

Once you push past that initial flutter of awkwardness, solo dates become the ultimate power move. Taking yourself out isn’t just a fun way to spend an afternoon. It is a full-blown declaration of independence, self-love and unstoppable confidence. Here is why you should start treating yourself like your own favourite date, plus a few ways to romanticise your own company.

Why You Need Solo Dates In Your Life

When your schedule is packed with classes, group projects, society meetings and time with flatmates, it is ridiculously easy to lose touch with the one person who matters most: you.

When you are always surrounded by people, you are constantly compromising. You pick the restaurant everyone agrees on, sit through the film everyone else wants to see, and feel your social battery drain in real time. Solo dates hand you the steering wheel and give you 100% control back:

  • Complete, unapologetic freedom: Stay as long or as short as you like without inventing an awkward excuse to leave. Ready to head home early? Let’s go. Want to spend two hours reading in the corner of a cosy coffee shop without speaking a single word? Done.
  • Zero budget pressure: Keep your outing strictly within your own budget, without feeling pressured to split an expensive bill or compromise on where you go.
  • No permission needed: Want to wander down every single aisle of TK Maxx, even though you were just there the other day? No one is stopping you!

Learning to enjoy your own company builds major, undeniable confidence. It teaches you that your happiness doesn’t depend on someone else’s availability, plans or mood. You become the source of your own joy, and that is a real superpower.

My perfect Day Out

For me, solo dating has become my absolute favourite form of self-care. It is all about those magical little rituals that make you feel like the main character in your own movie.

  • The Lunch and Hot Chocolate Routine: Whenever I take myself out for lunch alone, it is a total game-changer. I get to sit down, enjoy my meal in peace, and my personal favourite part, treat myself to the new Maple Hazel hot chocolate from Costa afterwards. There is something so cozy, luxurious, and comforting about sipping a rich, decadent hot chocolate all by yourself while people-watching.
  • The Inner-Child Movie Night: I also love going to the cinema by myself. Sure, walking into a screening of Toy Story 5 meant I was surrounded by a sea of excited kids, but honestly? It was amazing! Going to animated or nostalgic movies solo heals my inner child in a way nothing else can. There is zero judgment, just pure joy, a massive tub of popcorn, and getting completely lost in the magic of the big screen.

the ultimate act of celebrating you

At the end of the day, a solo date is the highest form of self-love. It is a bold, beautiful reminder that you are whole all on your own and that your company is worth celebrating.

So put on an outfit that makes you feel incredible, leave your social anxiety at the door, and go take yourself out on the best date of your life. The next time you walk up to a host stand and hear yourself say, “Table for one, please,” it won’t feel terrifying anymore. It will feel like the ultimate glow-up.

Trust me, you are going to fall in love with your own company!
