Grad School Musical

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

I always think that it’s weird that we as students are often told to prepare for “the real world.”  Are our lives an exception to reality?  I’ve seen The Matrix enough times to be a little scared at the prospect.

Nevertheless, as an underclassman you can certainly do yourself a favor in contemplating your own future.  For many of us, that future might involve graduate-level school.  And honestly?  Facing the unknown is terrifying, especially given our generation’s widespread financial insecurity.  So, let’s turn to the familiar in our time of grad school-related need and let the kids from High School Musical be our guide.

Start your research NOW.

Think about all the stresses that senior year can bring.  Now multiply them by twenty.  Wouldn’t you like to relieve your future self of at least one by thinking ahead?  Plus, plenty of nifty websites make it less strenuous than you might think.

If there’s even a slight chance that you want to pursue further higher education after graduation, I recommend exploring your options now.  It’s never too early, and who knows what path you might find?

How’s your résumé?

Don’t spread yourself too thin trying to make yourself look good on paper; if you’ve found a cause or organization on campus that you love, stick with it!  Dedication and passion look good AND benefit you, especially when it comes to earning positions of leadership.  Pressuring yourself to suddenly rack up accolades during your last year will leave you with whiplash.

Read the Digest.

I really ought to take my own advice here.  Gettysburg hosts a lot of professional events, and whether they’re specifically for graduate programs or just networking within your department, you can’t go wrong.  The Digest often has these listed conveniently for your perusal!

Tip: some of these events require professional dress.

Dare to dream.

I know it sounds like an inspirational cat poster, but think about those things that you’re passionate about, in AND outside of your major.  Chances are, there’s a postgrad program to suit you.  Some schools might even let you make your own.  Anything is possible.

Reach out.

The alumni from your major, while surely sad to be away from GC, are undoubtedly having their own wacky adventures.  By talking to them, you could gain valuable insight!

Go forth, young Bullet, and when senior year rolls around, you’ll be able to show prospective graduate programs who’s boss!
