I have the pleasure of writing about one of Gettysburg’s star students, Sam Evangelista. Sam and I have gotten to know each other through our sorority, Delta Gamma, and we also are on the Panhellenic Council together, where she sits at the head of the table as president! If being president of the governing body for all sororities isn’t enough, Sam is also involved in many other extracurricular activities: secretary for the Class of 2016, VP finance for our sorority, a member of the senior class gift committee, a student employee for sports information, and…as if that wasn’t enough she is also a lifeguard at our pool!
As you can probably guess, since Sam is a lifeguard, she is also on the swim team! She has been swimming for 15 years and still finds herself in love with the sport! Sam told me:
“Swimming has been a part of my life for so long. It has really shaped my work ethic and I couldn’t imagine my life without it. When I started looking for schools I was really lucky to find a school like Gettysburg that offered me a good education, was the perfect distance from home, and really had a program that I would fit into perfectly. Obviously swimming is a huge time commitment and it does get difficult to manage my obligations, but as long as I stay organized and on top of my work it all becomes worth it.”
She doesn’t take all of the credit, however:
“I really owe a lot of my happiness in the sport to my coaches and teammates, though. They are the ones that really make it worthwhile. My coaches are my mentors and my teammates are my best friends, without them it just wouldn’t be the same.”
As you can see, her team has become her family/support system here and have made her college experience very memorable. Sam is truly an outstanding student here at Gettysburg and I am so glad I have had the opportunity to become friends with her! With her determination Sam can accomplish anything and I look forward to seeing what she goes on to do after she graduates in the spring!
