We were all thrown into a new world filled with decisions, responsibilities, and of course, changes at the fresh age of 18. That being said, sometimes the first decision is not always the right one for you.

Deciding on a major was already troublesome for a few of us and finding that we’re not as passionate as we were originally, can be scary. But, change is inevitable, and wanting to change your major is not the end of the world. I promise you, it’s not.

Here are a few tips on transitioning from one major to another–from the expert herself. Me.

Research

Doing the research of finding the right major is essential to your journey. It goes beyond searching the salaries of possible job titles and reaches into the work that needs to be done in order to get there. It takes time to evaluate what is right for you.

Talk with people who are in the major you are interested in or even professors who teach that major to get a feel of the course load, requirements, and experience. Research goes beyond the computer screen and onto campus.

Re-evaluate Yourself

College has a funny way of shaping our perspectives, goals, and most importantly, values. We go through life experiences that form our once young minds into more mature ones. So, what we may have valued as a teenager might not be the same things that we value at the age of 20.

Taking a personality test to assess what type of worker you are may be essential to the process. Learn the type of person you’ve become, where you want to be after graduation or even after this semester, and the road you need to travel to get there.

Talk to Your Support Team

Lastly, and arguably the most important, talk to your support network about your decision or at least your thought process during this journey. The decision is not easy and sometimes may not yield the results you hoped for. Having a strong group of friends and/or family during this transition makes the change easier.

Switching your major isn’t easy at all. Sometimes it can be scary because you might want to stick with what you’re comfortable with. However, college teaches us that you can’t grow where you are comfortable. Take the step to make the “major” switch.
