It’s the greatest time of the year for you fashionistas, its time to express who you are, through your cute back to school outfits. Here are a few tips on some easy and cute essentials for your back to school fashion, featuring a friend of mine and a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Kayla Omsberg.
Kayla and I have picked 5 essential pieces for you ladies to add to your wardrobe for this years back to school fashion season.
Lets start with the trending ripped mom/boyfriend jeans look.
This style may not appeal to all of you ladies but why not step out of your comfort zone and add a little bit of edge to your everyday look.
Kayla’s style tip: I absolutely adore boyfriend jeans, as they go with pretty much anything! I like to stay away from tighter shirts, and opt towards looser shirts & sweaters (just make sure they don’t swallow your frame). Add a pair of flats and you’ve got a perfect easy outfit!
Booties! Although the fall weather hasn’t quite kicked in yet, it’s never too early to start wearing your cute booties. There are so many different options that fit so many different styles ranging from simple black ankle booties to edgy doc marten combat boots.
Kayla’s style tip: Avoid wearing booties with shorts. Instead, trying paring them with a skirt or skinny jeans. Black booties are a staple in my closet, and I wear them a ton since they go well with pretty much anything. Tan is also a great color to buy, and fringed booties are trending going into fall 2015.
Next up are statement necklaces! It’s time to use those cute Aztec inspired statement necklaces from festival season and incorporate them into your back to school fashion. Remember to keep it simple if you’re going to go all out on accessories, you don’t want to over decorate the outfit. Statement necklaces can fit every style, for my preppy ladies you can find cute and colorful statement pieces at J-crew, Francesca’s, South Moon Under, etc. For my edgy/hippie/alternative ladies you can hit up the terrific three; free people, urban outfitters, and Anthropology to find your large silver or gold statement pieces.
Kayla’s style tip: “When wearing a statement necklace, make sure to keep the rest of your outfit simple. One of the easiest way to look chic is to throw on a basic white tee and jeans, and then add a bright necklace.”
Now onto the loose fitting pants! The weather is clearly still hot and not appropriate for skinny jeans so that’s where the flowing summer pants come into play. Instead of worrying about getting sticky in shorts, find a cute pair of flowing pants that are breezy, versatile, and most importantly comfortable. Cropped flowing pants have been a huge trend for the 2015 fashion season.
Kayla’s style tip: “If you’re trying to make your pants the statement in your outfit, make sure to keep the top simple. A crop top is my favorite for high waisted pants, but a tucked in shirt works as well!”
Last but certainly not least are layers! We all know how cold it gets in the buildings at Mason, but wearing long sleeves is not ideal for the outside weather. So to keep you warm whip out your cute flannels, sweaters, and cardigans. Wear them during class but tie them around your waist while you are outside. A flannel tied around your waist can add just the right amount of spice to any simple outfit.
Kayla’s style tip: “My favorite layer combo for fall light tank or t-shirt, flannel, jean jacket, sweater or blazer, jacket and scarf”
Remember that it does not matter what you wear, it’s how you wear it. Confidence is key; whatever fashion trends you choose to follow this fall, own it!
