On fall outfits: having absolutely nothing to wear, and convincing myself I need a whole new wardrobe.
Every year, as soon as the weather starts getting colder, I somehow convince myself that I have absolutely nothing to wear. I will literally look at my closet, full of clothes, and still think, “I don’t have anything to wear for the fall. I need cute, warm clothes.” And suddenly, I am looking at sweaters and outfits I want to buy, as if I haven’t gone through an entire fall season before. I don’t know how I manage to convince myself that my wardrobe is completely unacceptable every single year, but somehow, I do. My clothes were perfectly fine a few weeks ago, and now I am acting like I need to start from 0. Honestly, I believe my fall personality has officially returned, and apparently, she has an expensive taste.
The moment I start feeling that colder air and seeing the leaves change colors, I start thinking about all the outfits I want to wear. I picture myself in cute sweaters, denim skirts, UGG mini boots, and all the combinations I have probably saved on Pinterest. I start thinking about the colors I want to wear, the pieces I want to buy, and how much better my outfits would look if I just had a few more things. Then I open my closet, look at everything I have, and somehow decide that I have absolutely nothing. Like, girl, you have clothes. You have been getting dressed this whole time. Why are we suddenly acting like you have never experienced fall before?
Honestly, I believe part of the fun is getting excited about it all over again. Fall makes me want to put more effort into getting dressed, even when I am just going to class or running errands. I want to wear cute outfits, find new ways to style the clothes I already have, and feel like I am making the most out of the season. I start romanticizing the little things, like getting a warm drink—although I love a little cold Dragonfruit Frappuccino—, listening to music while getting ready, or putting together an outfit that makes me feel cute even if I am not going anywhere special. It is almost like I have a whole different vision for myself when fall comes around, and suddenly, I want my everyday life to match it.
Of course, being a college girl means that the version of fall I imagine in my head is not always the version I actually experience. In my mind, I am waking up early, putting together the cutest outfit, and having a productive day where everything somehow goes according to plan. I am organized, my assignments are under control, and I have enough time to do everything I want to do. In reality, I am trying to keep up with my assignments, figuring out what I am going to wear to class, and probably telling myself that I will get everything together tomorrow. I want the cozy fall routines, but I also have responsibilities that don’t disappear just because I decided it is time to romanticize my life. Unfortunately, wearing a cute sweater doesn’t automatically make me more productive, which is honestly a little disappointing.
But, I believe, that is what makes this time of year so fun. Even when life gets busy, there are still little things I can look forward to. I like having a reason to get excited about my clothes, even if that means spending way too much money or time thinking about outfits I probably don’t need. I like the idea of having my favorite sweaters ready and feeling a little more put together when I leave the house. Sometimes, getting dressed in an outfit I really like is enough to make a random day feel a little better. It doesn’t have to be a special occasion, and I don’t have to go somewhere exciting. Sometimes, I just want to feel cute for myself, and I believe there is nothing wrong with that.
So yes, my fall personality has officially returned. I am ready for the cute outfits, the cozy days, the seasonal drinks, Halloween, and all the little things that make this time of year feel different. I will probably continue to complain that I have nothing to wear while looking at a closet full of clothes, and I will probably continue convincing myself that buying something new will
somehow complete my entire wardrobe. But honestly, that is part of the fun. And when winter comes around, I already know what is going to happen. I will open my closet, look at everything I have, and somehow convince myself that I have nothing to wear all over again.
