I’ll preface this article by letting you know I haven’t seen any of the other movies in the series. I’ve never been one to watch what I qualify as slasher movies. The only slasher movies or shows I’ve watched are those in the ‘Scream’ series because they’re funny. The ‘Halloween’ series isn’t funny at all. They set up the story well enough that you wouldn’t have to watch the other movies but would probably want to if you enjoyed it.

They gave the backstory about Michael and his sister within the first five minutes of the film, so the movie is pretty easy to follow even if you don’t have any prior knowledge. The movie has a bunch of violence and gore, a seven on a scale of 10. There’s a bunch of blood, stabbing and brutal killing. If you can’t take that, then please don’t watch it. Unless, of course, you like torturing yourself that way.

I had some issues with the plot. Here they are:

The teenage girl (Allison) goes out to find the killer with her boyfriend and his dad. I was astounded by her logic that she was going to go after a man who’d been killing people in this town before she was even born. What in the world? The man has lived through 10 movies now and I was so confused on why she thought that her going after him wouldn’t end in death. Especially since he killed maybe 20 people in the first half of the movie…c’mon.

The crazy hospital scene. A mob was incited because they thought they spotted Michael. Michael always wore a mask…which this man didn’t have. If these people had grown up in this town and been raised in this town then they should know the stories surrounding the infamous deranged serial killer and what he looked like. The hospital scene didn’t make any sense, but I understood the symbolism.

The killings. These people were just dying. Not even fighting back really. And let me tell you, Michael wasn’t even killing them in a fast way. This man was slow the entire movie.

Lastly, the people in this town don’t seem to have any self-preservation. He has been killing people for 10 movies now. I know the franchise wants to give Halloween fanatics more content, but I would have moved out of that town by now. Not only that, some of his victims have become so utterly obsessed that they don’t care whether they die or live.

Rating

At first, I thought this was just a slasher movie, but by the end, I came to the conclusion that this was a supernatural thriller. Michael Myers is a demon (ain’t no way he was able to kill that many people walking slowly), and looking it up on Google, I find that this is a true assumption. There was a ghost in the movie, and I don’t think most slasher movies include that. They have shot, beat and stabbed this man, and he doesn’t die which is morbidly the only funny part about this movie.

I think that this was a pretty good spooky season movie that a wide range of people can enjoy if they’re not looking to be utterly terrified but watching for the thrill. 6 out of 10 stars.
