De-stressing this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

This year is starting to come to a great finish. With finals creeping up, the holiday season keeping us busy, and the excitement of a new year approaching ahead, I’m sure all of you are just as stressed as I am. Trying to get in those last few nights of partying with your friends and trying to play catch up in those classes you thought would be a breeze this semester. While you stress out try to take a few steps back from all of the obstacles life is throwing your way to appreciate what you have and how fortunate you are to live in an area with so much to do. I’ve made a list of a few cool things to keep you guys busy and distress you before finals week takes over your lives.

1.     Fun activities: Dinner and Ice skating

a.     As cliché as it sounds ice-skating can be a fun activity and a great way to get your mind off of all the crazy things this month has in store for us. There are a few places not to far from campus that offer ice-skating and dining like Reston Town Center, Tysons corner, or downtown DC. Enjoy a nice dinner and ice skating with that special someone or a group of your friends before everyone goes home for break.

2.     Change your studying atmosphere

a.     Instead of staying on campus and trying to get your work done in the distracting JC, or Fenwick, try changing up your study spot. The little town of Fairfax has many great spots for a quick meal and study session. My favorite spot lately has been De Clieu café on Main Street. Friday nights are open mike nights, so go in, take your work and listen to some cool music by local artists.

3.     Give back

a.     What better time to give back, then the merry holiday season. There are plenty of fundraisers, food banks, homeless shelters, and organizations looking for volunteers and donations. Gather up a group of friends and head downtown to help bring joy to those who aren’t as fortunate this holiday season! Just a smile could brighten up a lot more people than you think, and the satisfaction you will receive from giving back during this time will give you a feeling of relief and happiness. Just the feeling you need to de stress.

4.     Have a holiday dinner/ party with friend

a.     Last but certainly not least plan a get together with your close friends before you all say goodbye for the semester. Having a holiday dinner or party can give you something to look forward to with your friends before the semester is over. Set up a fun secret Santa, make ginger bread houses, play holiday games, or open a nice bottle of wine and cook dinner with your favorite people. Just because thanksgiving is over doesn’t mean you still can’t be thankful for those you love and care for.

This time of the year is super conflicting for all of us collegiates. It is supposed to be a time of happiness, joy, and giving back. However, finals and the end of semester can stray us all away from this happy time. Just remember hustle through these next two weeks and know that the end goal is going to be as satisfying as ever.

Good luck to all of you and remember to keep the spirits up this holiday season!

Happy Holidays and Happy studying!
