We have all encountered that one person who loves to tell us how bad washing your hair every day is. We have been told that it damages your hair or strips it down or that it could even make your hair extra oily. But many of us, including myself, can’t stand the thought of having dirty hair every day and are absolutely taking the risk of death-by-shampoo. All of these comments had me wondering whether all of this is true and I am damaging my hair or if this is just a cop-out to showering every day?

One big reason to wash your hair every day is if you enjoy exercising. Working out and sweating daily can lead to a build-up of excess oil on your scalp, which can cause skin problems. No one wants to have an oily scalp or start breaking out so if you are experiencing these issues and not washing your hair every day, this could be the problem!

Many people also claim that washing your hair too often can lead to dandruff. It is true for some that shampooing could lead to a dry scalp, causing dandruff, but if your scalp is feeling itchy, washing your hair can help to remove those dead, uncomfortable cells and clear flakes. Not washing your hair if you have dandruff is certainly not making the situation any better.

If you are a native to Florida, like me, and experience the deadly humidity, washing your hair should be a habit to get used to. Just like those who sweat every day at the gym, living in a humid climate can lead to an excess buildup of oil on the scalp. Washing daily can keep your hair fungus- and dandruff-free.

One benefit of washing your hair that you might not have been familiar with is that it could actually help you if you are planning on growing your hair out. Washing your hair helps remove dead hair follicles, which in turn can stimulate hair growth. If you are disappointed in the rate in which your hair grows, try washing it every day!

Another benefit of washing your hair isn’t directly related to the health of your hair or skin. Instead, studies show that washing your hair is actually better for your mental health. When you feel clean, you are more likely to feel beautiful and confident in your appearance. Not to mention the fact that oily hair could also lead to oily skin which is sure to make you want to put your head in a bag. If you aren’t planning on showering before going out because of shower nay-sayers, ignore them! Choose the hair washing routine that makes you feel the best about yourself!

So, don’t listen to people who make you feel like you are doing a disservice to your hair by washing it every day. There are actually many benefits to your daily hair washing routine!
