Meet Gillian Kramer: Social Spear’s Vice President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Social media is a big part of our generation; but while many people know the basics, it’s easy to get lost in the marketing and branding aspect of it. However, with social media’s ever-increasing presence, it’s those same marketing and branding skills that can set your resume apart for an employer. Social Spear knows this and has made it their goal to teach students this necessary skill sets. Her Campus sat down with Social Spear’s Vice President, Gillian Kramer, to learn about the initiatives they are taking and how our audience can get involved. Here’s what we found out:

Her Campus (HC): What is Social Spear? What role do you play in Social Spear?

Gillian Kramer (GK): Social Spear is an FSU organization that focuses on helping students develop skills in social media and branding. I currently serve as the Vice President of Social Spear.

HC: What role do you play as Vice President?

GK: As Vice President, I stand in for the president when she isn’t able to lead events. Along with that, I act as a face of the organization during our events with the College of Communication and Information (CCI) and with other organizations.

HC: How can someone get involved with Social Spear? What role do members play as part of the Social Spear team?

GK: Any student at FSU can get involved at no cost! Members have the chance to come to our speaker events and workshops to learn more about branding. These workshops also offer them the ability to become more familiar with design tools. Some of the workshops we’ve done in the past are an Advanced Photoshop and Illustrator workshop, an intro to social media strategy and more!

HC: What are the advantages of getting involved?  What current projects are in the works for the Social Spear team?

GK: As members, students get to build their skillsets through events and by working on our ongoing projects. We host speaker events starring employees at Tallahassee companies, such as AIGA (the American Institute of Graphic Arts). Right now, we are also rebranding our entire organizational style guide, starting with our logo.

HC: What are three pieces of advice you would give to someone who is looking to work with social media/branding?

GK: I would say to stay true to who you are and what your style is. Don’t wait for inspiration to hit to make something cool. And, of course, do what you love!

Now that Gillian’s sold us all on joining Social Spear, head over to Instagram and follow them @socialspearfsu to stay updated about upcoming events and workshops. And don’t forget to stop by Landis Green this Wednesday, October 16, at 6 p.m. to meet the team for a picnic pizza party!
