Quit the Cliché! How To Treat *Yourself* On Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

This Valentine’s Day, don’t be sad if you don’t have a significant other. Even if you do, make sure you love yourself. Here are some of my favorite ways to treat myself on Feb. 14!

Watch movies

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite times to cuddle up on the couch (or in my dorm bed) and watch a movie! This Feb. 14, find a friend, a pet, or the closest Squishmallow, and find a movie you love! Here are some lovey, and not-so-gushy, movies to get you started!

Valentine’s day

This is the perfect rom-com! The plot takes place on Valentine’s Day, which is a bonus, and you’ll find yourself laughing, crying, and clapping in the end. This movie follows multiple storylines as the all-star cast (seriously look it up, no one could pay for this cast today) navigate their lives. Taylor Swift even makes an appearance!

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE

Even if you’re not with someone, this film is sweet. The plot is predictable, but it’s a Gen Z classic that always puts a smile on my face. (Plus, there are two more for later!)

Mamma Mia

This one is a classic, obviously. This movie will always leave you with a smile and a happy feeling. Mamma Mia is much less about romance and more about a mother-daughter bond mixed with the importance of friendship. Plus, it’ll make you laugh every time. Watch with your mom, friend, or dog!

the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Ah, the serotonin and nostalgia in this movie. This film is the epitome of true friendship. It’s always a feel-good. Every friend group needs to watch this one!

Legally Blonde

From girl to girl, we all know this movie is an anthem. No matter your age (or hair color), this film is empowering. While Elle Woods does find love, that’s not at all the main plot, nor the point of the film. It’s perfect movie for the occasion, and the right color too!

the Book Club

This movie follows four older women who think they won’t find passion. Their friendship and laughable experiences bring everyone together. Despite their goal to find love, the main point of the movie is the power of girlhood.

Galentine’s Day: What to Bring and what to do

Even if you do have a significant other, it is so important to show love to your girls. Host or attend a Galentine’s Day party to keep the bond strong. This is especially important in college!

wHAT TO BRING

  • A heart-shaped pizza! Just look it up on TikTok. It’s simple and yummy, and your friends will love it.
  • Strawberries with the tops cut to look like hearts! Dip them in some chocolate and throw them in the fridge to create a delectable treat.
  • Try baking something new! Baking is therapeutic and the effort is the best part.

WHAT TO DO

  • Have a projector night! You can find a cheap one on Amazon and use it later in your dorm. Whether you do this in your home or outside, find a blanket, make some snacks, and enjoy!
  • Host a picnic! Outdoors or indoors, set up a cute setting on a blanket or decorated table and have everyone bring their favorite snacks or platters. Easy and always a hit!
  • Have a scrapbook night! There’s nothing better than looking back on old memories through pictures. So why not have some fun with your girls and put them all in one place with some colored tape? (Hello 2016.) Do a page for each event or pick another format and have fun!
  • Paint! Like the scrapbook night, grab some canvases and take your girls somewhere to paint. You could go to the beach and paint your best sunset with some snacks to enjoy the process, find a park with a nice picnic table, or do it in the comfort of your home.

How to treat yourself

  • My new favorite thing to do is put on my cutest PJs that make me feel good. Something so simple that you probably already own may make your night that much better. So, this February, go buy yourself a new set to feel pretty in. No one has to see you in it but yourself, and that’s all that matters!
  • Take yourself to dinner! This one is so simple and so fun. Find a cute place (it could even be a coffee shop) and celebrate yourself (plus, it’ll be cheap!). You could even bring a good book!
  • Buy yourself something on your wish list. We all know you have one, so splurge and get yourself that active set or purse you’ve been wanting! Girl math: if you’re not buying it for someone else, it’s like it’s free!
  • Journal. This is so therapeutic. Write down your thoughts, hopes, dreams, etc. It isn’t for everyone, but I thought it wasn’t for me until I started using it to write out my worries and ease my anxiety. It’s worth a shot!
  • If journaling doesn’t work, try reading a book. I can get lost in a book. Enter another world, forget your worries, make time fly, and entertain yourself.
  • Try something new! This year, my New Year’s resolution is to try something new every month. So far, I’ve tried more than just one in January, and I don’t plan to stop. It has truly made me happier and opened up new doors. Try something you’ve been putting off or find something you never thought you’d do. You won’t regret it!

Whatever you do this Valentine’s Day, find a passion and enjoy yourself. Not everything is for everybody, and that’s okay! If we were all the same, there would be no progress in the world! You don’t need a significant other to spoil you on Feb. 14. Do it yourself; you deserve it!
