Her Picks: The Editors’ Guide to Fashion, Beauty, Music & More

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Our editors here at Her Campus FSU have decided to create a bi-weekly column, Her Picks, sharing what we’re obsessed with at the moment. Every other week, our editors will let you in on their latest finds — whether it be a cool new beauty product, interesting restaurant or a band they can’t get enough of. Here are a few of our editors’ picks this week:

Malory Hudson, Social Media Director

1. All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot

“Stressed” is not an accurate adjective to describe my spring semester. I have had a non-stop, hectic semester from hell and this book is the only thing (besides sangria) that is keeping me sane. Written by James Herriot, an English vet from the 1930s, “All Creatures Great and Small” is a kind, beautifully written joy of a book. From stories of birthing calves to meeting the love of his life on a hill, this book contains all of life’s joys in one neat package. If you can take 30 minutes of time to read this book, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

2. “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson

I promise you that this album is the greatest throwback you could ever ask/want for. You start the album thinking there is only two or three hits and then BAM every song is a total banger and a highlight of your youth. “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson is the epitome of 2000s pop and is a modern classic. I promise it will make any study sesh that much better.

1. The People vs. OJ Simpson

I just started watching the show The People vs. OJ Simpson and it’s everything! I can’t stop watching it and I wish it was a series on Netflix that way I could finish it in one day. I never really fully understood what happened with the whole OJ Simpson story but this show so far has explained it so well and I just want to learn (and watch) even more. Watch the trailer here.

2. Beauty Guru Videos

I really, really can’t get over these beauty gurus on YouTube. I don’t know what is so interesting about watching someone put their foundation, contour and highlight on, but I can’t get enough. It’s become a relaxing thing for me to watch and my secret dream is to become a YouTuber… but shhh don’t say anything! My top three favorite YouTube beauty gurus are Jaclyn Hill, Kathleen Lights and Desi Perkins.

1. Canopy Road Café

For those of you who know me, my favorite breakfast food is chocolate chip pancakes. Let’s face it though, I can eat pancakes for any meal and I’ll be satisfied. Therefore, whenever I try a new breakfast or brunch place, I have to try the pancakes. I recently went to Canopy Road Café (I know, I know, I’m late to the game), and tried the peanut butter cup pancakes. I was not disappointed. Anytime someone puts chocolate and peanut butter together I’m sold, but these were next level pancakes. I’m talking about chocolate and peanut cup chips fused in the batter and then more chocolate and peanut butter on top. Not sold? They also have Funky Monkey, Cookies & Cream and Cinnamon Roll pancakes just to name a few. Check out the rest of their menu and try to keep your mouth from watering.

2. Spin Class at the Leach

New year, new me. That was my motto January 1st (whose isn’t?) and I was determined to go to the gym more often in 2016 whether that was just once a week (have to start small, right?) or three times. It was almost the end of January when my friend invited me to take a Barre class with her and seeing as I hadn’t made it to the gym once, I decided it was time to start. I actually really enjoyed it and realized that even if I just made it to the gym for that one class once a week, I was reaching my goal. However, I decided to push myself a little more and I signed up for a spin class. I never paid attention to all the hype around SoulCycle and such, but I have to tell you, I have taken a number of classes now and I love it. I feel so powerful and strong after each class that my whole mentality about my health and well-being has changed. I recommend checking it out at least once. 1. Spotify Playlist: Pop Rising

The name makes the playlist sound a little cheesy, but most of the songs are new and surprisingly good. In this past week alone, it has become my go-to playlist to work out to and I keep it as background noise while I do homework. Be sure to check out “River” by Bishop and “Once in A While” by Timeflies.

2. All Saints Cafe

This hole-in-the-wall, hipster paradise is open 24 hours and has a great chai tea. It’s a classic study spot that could also be used as a first date location as well. The one downside: Be sure to only wear shorts and a t-shirt because it is always around 85 degrees in there.

3. This Is a Call: The Life and Times of Dave Grohl

If you don’t think you know who Dave Grohl is, think again. Grohl is the former drummer of Nirvana and the current lead singer of the Foo Fighters. I started reading his book a couple of weeks ago and haven’t been able to put it down. Grohl is a very interesting artist with many stories on how he go to where he is today – a family man. Bonus: there is a section that gives in interesting glance on Kurt Cobain!
