I’ll be honest, my first year of college was a rollercoaster. I was stuck living in sucky Salley hall, packed in like sardines with three other girls. Anyone who lives, or has lived, in Salley can vouch for me: it is pretty horrific. Even with all the Salley scares, my suitemates were probably the best thing to happen to me in college. From late night Maratha Stewart decorating extravaganzas to fun nights out, this initial year of college was monumental for my growth as a person. That being said, there are many regrets I do have, which is why I am writing you this letter…

Dear Freshmen,

This first year of college will be very scary at times. There may be moments when you feel like you are lost, and you have no idea what you are doing with your life. Don’t get wrapped up in this feeling! It is 100 percent normal, believe me. Remember what you came here for, and if that reason changes, so be it. Don’t be scared to change your major! Don’t be afraid to speak up in class, whether it be a small classroom or an auditorium in HCB. Follow your intuition and make bold moves. Your time in college is the chance to discover who you are and what you are passionate about.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT GO HOME EVERY WEEKEND!

Remember to get out of your dorm or apartment! Try to explore campus and meet new people! Lay out on Landis and go to football games. PLEASE go to football games. You will regret it if you don’t, I swear. Show your school spirit and yell the Seminole War Chant along with everyone else. Nothing sounds quite like Doak Stadium when its full of proud Seminoles. Go to Market Wednesdays (or White Trash Wednesdays if you are feeling adventurous). Join a club that piques your interest. Also, don’t forget to keep an eye out for all the free things being handed out as you go to and from classes. Be a part of the community and absorb all that makes Florida State University unique.

Get off campus too! Go out with your friends to the various clubs Tallahassee has to offer. Not your scene? That’s okay! Tally has other options to explore as well. Rent a kayak at the Rez and enjoy a Sunday Funday with your friends while paddling along the lake. Bring a picnic out to Wakulla Springs. Try one of the many restaurants we have spread all over the city and add variety to your diet.

On a more serious note, go to class. One of the worst feelings is getting a grade lower than you originally would have gotten because of absences. Don’t brush off assignments to make time for partying. But also, do not allow the stress of classes to take a toll on you. Sometimes it is important to take a mental health day.

Some of the most important advice I can give you is this: be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid to be yourself. Have fun, be responsible, and enjoy all Florida State has to offer.

Rebecca is a junior at FSU majoring in creative writing. She enjoys reading novels until midnight (okay, maybe 2:00 AM), binge-watching shows on Netflix, and hiking in the mountains of North Carolina.
I'm currently studying Editing Writing & Media and Public Relations at FSU. When I'm not busy, I love scouting out new restaurants, parks and things to do around Tallahassee. And of course I document it all on Instagram! #DoItForTheGram
