Your FSU Major, Your Iconic Female TV Character

Every college major comes with its own stereotypes. While stereotypes are often exaggerated and extreme, some qualities are needed to study certain subjects. Your major can say a lot about your personal interests and traits, so I thought, why not compare these to our favorite female TV characters?

I know not everyone in a major is the same or fits these stereotypes, but I hope you can relate to at least one aspect of these characters. Each of them has their own traits and interests that make them unique and aligned to a different subject. I did my best to try and match what I think some of these famous TV leads would major in if they were here at FSU.

Political Science: Leslie Knope

Political science majors would have to be Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation, which is a mockumentary sitcom that centers on the lives of the government employees of Pawnee, Indiana. Leslie works as the Deputy Director of the Parks Department of Pawnee.

Leslie is extremely enthusiastic about public service and strives to improve her community in her time as a government official. Someone studying political science would have the same drive to fight for what they believe in through public policy. These students have optimism for serving their communities and might even have some color-coded binders, planners, and waffles by their side!

Education: Jessica Day

Which TV icon belongs to the education major? It’s Jess! Jessica Day is the bubbly star of the sitcom New Girl, which follows her journey into adulthood along with her three male roommates. It’s important to mention that Jess is a teacher and devotes her time to making sure her students learn and have fun while doing it.

Even though she’s a little quirky, Jess is extremely nurturing and naturally falls into the caregiver role for her friends, similar to people in the education major. People in this major have the same passion for shaping the lives of future generations, and that same caring demeanor needed to connect with students that comes so naturally to Jess.

Art: Pam Beesly

The Office is one of the most popular sitcoms, and my personal favorite, so I had to match Pam Beesly to the art major. The Office is a mockumentary-style sitcom that follows the operations of a paper company named Dunder Mifflin led by a very untraditional manager, to put it mildly. Pam works as the receptionist at Dunder Mifflin, but her real passion lies in her art.

Throughout the show, we see glimpses of her creative side as she opens up more. She has an art show, paints a mural for the office, and even goes to art school for a while. Pam is a little more reserved than her more eccentric coworkers, but similar to people in this major, she takes her passion seriously, and it makes up a large part of her identity.

Business: Blair Waldorf

Blair Waldorf, or the queen bee of the Upper East Side, is one of the stars of Gossip Girl, a series that centers around the drama and chaos of teenagers who come from the wealthiest and most powerful families in New York City. Blair is known for being very ambitious, doing anything to get what she wants, and commanding every room she walks into.

There’s no question that if Blair entered the business world, she’d work her way up to being CEO in no time. This same drive, confidence, and leadership skills that Blair has are particularly important in being a business major.

Communications: Carrie Bradshaw

While I was brainstorming characters, I couldn’t help but wonder, what character would fit a communications major? Carrie Bradshaw, of course! Carrie is the lead of the series Sex and the City, which follows the lives of four women and how they navigate their relationships, friendships, and all the obstacles that come along the way.

Carrie is a writer, and her career centers around her relationships, her observations of the world around her, and her ability to communicate these ideas to her audience. This same curiosity and desire to share thoughts with others align perfectly with a Communications major. It’s too bad we can’t have Carrie herself on the Her Campus writing team.

Psychology: Fleabag

Fleabag, the 2016 limited series, follows the life of a young woman living in London as she tries to navigate her adult life while dealing with heavy emotions like guilt and grief.

To me, Fleabag seemed like the perfect choice for a psychology major. Fleabag is a complex character; we get to see her impulsivity, her dry humor, and her tendency to mask her feelings with it. She’s constantly observing the people around her, is very self-aware, and reflective, like someone with a psychology major. Like Fleabag, these students definitely find themselves psychoanalyzing the people around them and maybe even themselves. That can be complicated, but don’t worry, it’ll pass.

Theatre: Rachel Berry

I mean, please (or pleek), who else could be a theatre major but Rachel Berry from Glee? This series follows the revival of the Glee Club, known as the New Directions, at McKinley High School and the chaotic lives of the students and staff. Rachel Berry is arguably the most talented member of the New Directions, and she’s anything but humble about it.

Rachel is fully aware of her talent and is dedicated to achieving her dream of moving to New York City to be on Broadway. Just like the students in this major, Rachel is extremely passionate about musical theatre and performing and wants nothing more than to be center stage.

Hopefully, you can identify with your iconic female lead in some ways, and even if your major wasn’t included, there’s certainly a TV icon that matches you too!
