Sitcoms are probably the best kind of television that has been put out into the world. They’re fun to watch over breakfast, to have in the background while doing homework, or to watch when you snuggle into bed for the night. Even though they tend to be long, it almost feels like no time passes once you get into it.
There’s nothing like a good sitcom. Their sole purpose is to be quirky and fun while giving you a bit of drama to keep you invested. They’re those feel-good, binge-worthy, gut-wrenching pieces of media that keep you attached, and you can never get over them once you finish them.
Whether you’re here to find which sitcom to watch next or simply to see which sitcom you are, I’ve compiled a list of which sitcom I think you are based entirely on your major!
Education: New Girl
To me, New Girl must go to the Education majors. This sitcom is about a girl who moves to Los Angeles and rooms with three other guys in her apartment. The show revolves around the four of them living together and the chaos they go through, along with the heartwarming bonding moments. The main character, Jessica Day, also happens to be a teacher. She has the personality I imagine most teachers would have, making this a perfect pick for the education majors.
Communications: Friends
Friends is one of my favorite sitcoms ever. It’s about a friend group of six as they navigate their jobs and lives in New York City. It shows the ups and downs and how a friendship can get you through anything. I think communications majors fit best for this because this show revolves around human connections and public relations, not only in their friendships, but in some of their jobs as well.
Environmental Science: Parks and Recreation
I feel like the name of this sitcom automatically gives it away. Parks and Recreation is a sitcom about government employees who work together because they want to make their city better. The show starts with them wanting to build a community park for people to enjoy. Parks and Recreation is a feel-good story about working together and the friendships that come out of it, making it a good pick for environmental science majors.
Philosophy: The Good Place
This is one of those picks where I honestly think I couldn’t have chosen anything better. The Good Place follows four friends who’ve died and gone to “The Good Place,” but some of them believe they don’t belong there. To stay, they decide to take lessons and learn ethics from an actual philosophy professor, making it the perfect choice for philosophy majors. This show is not your normal sitcom, but it causes you to think about right and wrong while also having you cheer for the “non-moral” characters.
Criminal Justice/Criminology: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
I honestly think it would’ve been “criminal” for me not to have Brooklyn Nine-Nine for criminal justice and criminology majors. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a sitcom set in the workplace of police detectives who navigate their normal lives along with fighting crime day-to-day. This sitcom perfectly mixes comedy, drama, and real crime-fighting. In my opinion, this is the best pick for these majors and my personal favorite (coming from a criminology major).
Psychology: Modern Family
Modern Family is a sitcom surrounding the lives of, you guessed it, a family. It shows the lives of the members of this big family and how they deal with day-to-day situations. They might not always get along, but at the end of the day, they always come back to each other. I believe this makes it the best choice for psychology majors because you get to analyze the different relationships each family member has with one another.
Engineering: How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother, in my opinion, goes to the engineering majors. This sitcom revolves around the “how,” or different “equations” of how things all line up in the end. This show is funny, chaotic, and all about the romance. It surrounds a friend group and their journey as they try to find their soulmates. Engineering is all about math and how things function to create something beautiful, showing that How I Met Your Mother is the ideal choice for this major.
Business: The Office
The Office is probably one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. In all honesty, I think this sitcom fits best with business majors. It takes place in the office of a paper company and shows their everyday work lives as they try to progress. The show involves a lot of humor and not a lot of working, which I also think fits a lot with the stereotype that business majors don’t have to do a lot. Obviously, you don’t have to agree with that statement, but just remember, I probably gave you one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.
There are honestly so many more sitcoms to choose from, so if your major isn’t here, that doesn’t mean you don’t have one. There’s a sitcom out there for everyone; you just need to find it. If your major is here and you haven’t seen the sitcom I’ve given you, maybe you should. You never know if you’ll find your new favorite show!
