700 Miles Away: How To Fall in Love With FSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Leaving my hometown for college and searching for a “new chapter” or “fresh start” might’ve been one of the scariest yet most rewarding decisions I’ve made. Even if it’s only a few hours away, the drastic changes you experience once you start your first year can become overwhelming. I am originally from Houston, Texas, and I remember being so nervous about how to make my college experience perfect. Looking back now as I enter my sophomore year, I can proudly say Florida State University (FSU) is my home away from home, and I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. I want to provide insight on ways to expand and prioritize your first few months at FSU so you can set yourself up for success.

Reminder: Everyone is Feeling the Same Way

You should first consider that everyone is in the same boat. We all have taken the steps to leave home and pursue our futures by furthering our education at Florida State. Almost everyone moves to a new area and is experiencing adulthood and complete independence for the first time. We all seek the same inclusive, inviting, and captivating energy that the idea of college brings. However, you won’t feel that energy if you don’t put yourself out there.

Look Past Your Dorm Room

This leads me to my next point: be confident. Being sociable and welcoming to everyone you meet allows for casual and successful conversations. You cannot meet new people and find new opportunities if you don’t allow yourself the freedom to explore your options. Knocking on doors in your dorm or talking to the person next to you in class will make you stand out as an approachable and considerate person. Even though it might seem overwhelming, reaching out to people who have a similar experience as you because of their dorm or class schedule could result in close friendships that last a lifetime.

Take advantage of campus resources

FSU has so many resources, registered student organizations, and events throughout campus that you are sure to find a place that fits you and your goals. Here are some ideas on how to get involved and use FSU resources to the fullest!

Attend the FSU Involvement Fair or Market Wednesday

The FSU Involvement Fair occurs once at the beginning of each semester and allows students to explore different interests and recognized student organizations throughout Florida State. Located in the Student Union, just browsing the hundreds of clubs and opportunities offered here can help you familiarize yourself with what is on campus and how to get involved. Similarly, Market Wednesday consists of recognized student organizations and local vendors on Legacy Walk. This event occurs every Wednesday of the school year and offers yet another opportunity to dive into the endless possibilities of passions, academics, community service, and major-oriented organizations Florida State provides.

Revisit Club Downunder/Union Productions

Club Downunder/Union Productions, or CDU, is a student-led organization hosting numerous social events throughout the semester. Their events are determined and run entirely by students, ranging from speeches to concerts to crafts. Whatever your interests might look like, CDU aims to host events that align with student passions. CDU can be an excellent place to consider taking your roommates, friends, or yourself to when you have free time. Finding things to do that are good for your mental health is crucial, and Club Downunder/Union Productions offers such relaxing, informative, and fun events. I am always following along with their Instagram to stay updated on events they host, and I often find myself attending the concerts or comedians they bring to FSU. This small venue in the Student Union is always full of the most genuine people and fun events. I highly recommend looking into them!

Consider Greek Life

Considering being a part of Fraternity and Sorority Life at FSU was one of the topics I was the most questionable about. Still, I’m so grateful for the opportunity and wouldn’t have changed my decision to go through recruitment. Fraternity and Sorority Life, or FSL, is an organization focused on individual and community development, centered around values of leadership, scholarship, service, and brotherhood/sisterhood. The process allowed me to open up to the people around me, familiarize myself even more with the campus, and introduce myself to many opportunities I have never considered. I have become a part of multiple recognized student organizations because of the people I met through Greek life. This process is also a great way to get yourself out there and push to meet new people.

Utilize Social Media

Social media may seem like a more obvious recommendation, but I didn’t realize how helpful this was until I started looking into my feed. Using social media to your advantage, you can quickly determine what is happening on campus and how to get involved. Following accounts for recognized student organizations that spark your interest will help you stay updated with recent events. Many organizations, sports, clubs, and schools generally post relevant news and information, which can be very beneficial if you don’t know where to look. I’ve found out what concerts were hosted at FSU during soccer or baseball games, how to apply for different programs, and so much more! Social media is a simple and helpful way to familiarize yourself with Florida State.

Overall, your college experience is what you make it. Your decision to put yourself out there and get involved can make you more adjusted and successful in your future endeavors. Leaving everything and everyone behind can be stressful, but understanding that everyone is in the same boat, and pushing yourself to be comfortable in your skin is helpful when trying to figure out what is happening on campus. College is a big adjustment and takes time, so don’t feel pressured to figure it out immediately. Just know that utilizing the resources offered to your fullest potential can help you significantly. Yes, college can be scary, but soon enough, I hope you can welcome this new life with open arms and call Florida State your home away from home.

Hey yall! I am a second-year undergraduate student and member of the Her Campus at Florida State chapter. I am an out-of-state student majoring in environmental science, and have always had a passion for writing. Within HerCampus, I am part of the social media team for Instagram, an academic intern, and staff writer. My work often varies from campus advice and environmental current events to lifestyle articles based around healthy habits and some of my other passions such as thrifting, being outdoors, and attending concerts. Beyond Her Campus, I am involved in my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, as a Social Media Chair and Line Dance member. I additionally fundraise for Dance Marathon at FSU and am a member of both the Environmental Service Program and Maji Project.
