Everyone has that one musician/musical group that can give them “the feels” upon hearing the first note of a song. For me, it’s Zac Brown Band. Lucky for us Seminoles, Zac and the gang will be filling the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center with their music this Thursday, November 12th for Homecoming. Whether you’re a country music lover or not (which I seriously hope you are), ZBB’s versatile sound can win over just about anyone. Their music is more than just some words sang along to the strum of a guitar and the bang of a drum—they put their souls into every second of those three-minute songs. They’re the band you can go to for any given situation—lounging on the beach, reminiscing on an old love, driving down an old back road or just spending time with those you cherish most. They have a knack for bringing us musical euphoria and filling hearts with thankfulness, wanderlust and love.

As if Zac Brown’s music wasn’t a big enough gift to the world, he is also the founder of Camp Southern Ground, a non-profit organization that provides a memorable camp experience to children with all types of needs. The camp’s primary focus is to help these young people conquer personal difficulties in an environment that is primed to help them flourish. The special experience this camp offers is a remarkable one—enriching the lives of those who may not have had the fairest hand dealt to them and cultivating helpful life skills. YOU can help this organization by volunteering, donating, sponsoring an event or simply buying one of their t-shirts.

Further, not only do ZBB’s jams have great rhythm, their lyrics offer awe-inspiring life lessons and thought-provoking sayings.  Their songs tell stories of love, loss and life’s most precious/organic moments and make us feel apart of that story. Here are a few of my favorite lyrics (aka my arsenal of personal mantras) for y’all to ponder:

“And if you’re too busy talkin’, you’re not busy listenin’ to hear what the land has to say. Quiet your mind.” –”Quiet Your Mind”

“We’re all in this world together. Life’s a gift that we have to treasure. Happiness, now that is the measure. Love is the remedy.” –”Remedy”

“Know you’re not the only ship out on the ocean. Save your strength for things that you can change. Forgive the ones you can’t. You gotta let it go.” –”Let It Go”

“Here in a small town where it feels like home, I got everything I need and nothing that I don’t” -“Homegrown”

“I keep looking for some kind of sign, trying to hold on in this race against time. I can’t say where the next bend might be- that is the beauty in life’s mystery” –”Tomorrow Never Comes”

“No we don’t have a lot of money, all we need is love. We’re free as we’ll ever be.” –”Free”

The Zac Brown Band soaks up their surroundings to fuel their lives’ passions through their music and it’s quite clear that they’ve got “Whatever It Is.” AND if that wasn’t enough… here’s a little fun fact: When you see this guy (below) on Thursday, throw the Tomahawk Chop his way! John Driskell Hopkins, one of the bands members, graduated from the greatest university in the nation in 1993. Not only will you be enjoying some of the best music around, you’ll be jamming along with a fellow Seminole!
