10 Reasons Why Tallahassee Is Better Than Gainesville

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.
Need we say more?

1. Nightlife

Tallanasty has an unmistakable reputation for the party scene. Whether you’re at a club, bar or frat party, you know you’re going to have a crazy time. Florida State University was ranked the third biggest party school in the country by Playboy this year. It’s not uncommon to see gators crawling around Tallahassee’s nightlife because, well, theirs sucks.

2. Happy Hour

Monday begins the countdown to the infamous Tallahassee Happy Hour. Head over to Potbelly’s or Clyde’s on Friday afternoon to unwind from a stressful week. Unfortunately, UF students don’t have this luxury and have to wait until night time to go out to their mediocre bars.

3. Arts Programs

FSU is home to many incredible arts programs and very talented students. The Hollywood Reporter ranked FSU number 17th in the world for film school. According to synonym.com, FSU is one “…of the best modern dance schools among the top 10 university dance programs.” College Magazine ranked FSU’s Musical Theater program 9th in the Nation. In addition, Florida State’s Art Program is ranked 24th in the country and the Music school is ranked 16th in the nation.

4. Greek Housing

Greek life is huge in Tallahassee and in Gainesville. One big difference: the houses. Greek housing here consists of beautiful colonial-style mansions. Greek housing in Gainesville consist of ugly, old brick buildings with letters slapped on the side. Heritage Grove is a frat house haven and is also home to the largest fraternity houses in the country: Pi Kappa Alpha.

5. Mascot

Now I have to give it to UF for saving some money on their cheap fuzzy mascot suit – hopefully they’re putting the extra cash toward improving one of the other things in this article. Yeah, their little gator suit is cute, but it’s nothing compared to Osceola and Renegade. You can feel the Seminole pride when they come charging out onto the field before a game.

6. Attractive People

Florida State University has the most right-swiped females on Tinder in the country out of any college. Walking to class you will see model material everywhere. These students are the stars of FSU’s fashion magazines. University Primetime ranked FSU second in the nation for Most Attractive Students compared to 22nd for UF.

7. Beautiful Campus

Florida State University will appear on any ranking of the most beautiful campuses in America. The gorgeous brick buildings and luscious foliage give FSU a traditional college feel. Dodd Hall has a gothic architectural style including stained glass leaving any student feeling like they’re in Hogwarts. The most iconic part of FSU is Westcott Fountain – an Insta-pic in front of this will make any Gator jealous. UF on the other hand is made up of old buildings that are so spread out it makes it really inconvenient to walk from class to class.

8. Always Something to Do

Unlike Gainesville, Tallahassee is full of life, and there is always something happening, on or off campus. Among the most popular is “First Friday” in Railroad Square. On the first Friday of every month, boutiques, art galleries and food trucks fill the streets as students wander around the area. Food Truck Thursdays, free movies at the ASLC and Cosmic Bowling at Crenshaw Lanes are just a few other fun activities FSU students can enjoy.

9. Capitol

Being Florida’s capitol adds a historic value to Tallahassee. The capitol building is located right in front of FSU’s campus and in front of that is the charming capitol museum adorned with candy cane striped awnings. On a given day you can go hear a Florida Supreme Court case or watch a legislative debate.

10. Football

With UF barely scoring two points against us last November, it’s always fun to rub our win in their faces. With 15 conference titles and 34 first-round draft picks, it’s no question whose team is better. Holding that Gator head is a beautiful sight and we can’t wait to see it again next year in Doak.

Hey my name is Taylor! In my free time I like reading/watching videos about anything beauty related. I have way more lipstick than a girl could ever need, but I will probably buy more. I'm a documentary addict and love learning about new things.
