The first week of Freshman year, I walked into the bathroom on the first morning of orientation with no makeup on and I quickly discovered just how different things were. Suddenly, I was shy about washing my face in the morning or taking my makeup off to decompress at night. Anytime I walked down the hallway to my own room, I saw girls with perfect skin passing me, and constantly diverted my gaze so that no one would look at me. It took me finding my friends and getting more confident in my own skin to realize that at 8am on a Monday morning, nobody cares enough to judge my flawed skin. Instead of being embarrassed, I decided to be proactive and do things that I knew would help with my insecurities. These are a few of the things that worked for me:
- Don’t be so hard on yourself. This sounds like the most simple thing, but in reality it can be the hardest task. Realize that everyone around you has their own insecurities, whether they show it or not.
- De-stress. One of the key contributors to acne is stress. I know…it’s hard to de-stress when you have about 10 million things to think about, but just take a moment every now and then to do something for yourself – watch an episode of your favorite show or read a book.
- Do a face mask. The key is finding a mask that works for you. I use the Innisfree Green Tea Mask set during the winter to make sure that my skin stays nice and hydrated. They’re products are amazing, check out their website here: https://us.innisfree.com/homepage!
- Drink water. Yes, I know everyone and their mother tells us to drink water and that it will cure everything, but it’s true! The key to keeping your skin clear is keeping it hydrated, and if your body isn’t hydrated there’s no way your skin can be.
- Listen to your body. If a certain food is always hurting your stomach, chances are it’s causing acne too. Our bodies work in wild ways and when we actually listen to them, there are bound to be some great results!
