The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

We all know that friendships can be hard to navigate especially among girls. The weird competition, the subtle sabotaging, you name it. But it is important to recognize when your friendship has crossed the line and has become toxic. In this article, I compiled a few hot girl opinions from fellow hot girls who have been in a similar situation before. If you are ever feeling unsure if you should end that friendship that drains you feel free to read through this advice and refer back to what others have to say on the subject for grounding. <3

Q: What are your thoughts on toxic friendships and what is your advice to those stuck in one?

In my opinion, no one is inherently toxic, and no one is trying to be a toxic friend, a lot of times people react based on past personal experiences. However, just because this might be true does not mean that you have to put up with toxic treatment. You can step back from a friendship or situation that has overstepped a personal boundary while forgiving them without allowing this to occur again. You might think it’s the end of the world especially if it’s someone you consider your best friend, trust me I get it. But you must put yourself and your mental health first, if this person is affecting you negatively it is in your best interest to have a talk and mend the friendship or let them go. I always refer back to this one quote “we were girls together” because no matter how the friendship ended, we were girls together trying to figure out the world and growing at our own pace.

I think that as a girl most of us have been in a toxic friendship before or in a codependent relationship with another person because as girls we build a special relationship with other girls that feed this codependency, but this as much as it is beautiful can be toxic as well. Once you realize you are in a toxic situation, you have to remove yourself from this environment to heal. It is really important to surround yourself with people whom you care about but who also care about you and support you and can hold you accountable. You’re meant to outgrow people, you’re allowed to, it is in our human nature to outgrow things that no longer serve us. I’ve outgrown so many people in my life and that doesn’t diminish the fact that they have helped me grow so much as a person and I’ve gained so much from their friendships as well, so I think is important to recognize the effect they have had on your life but that they might also not be the best influence on you anymore.

I think that thinking about your life as a whole and where this person fits in is very important. If the cost of being in this friendship outweighs the happiness you feel by having this person in your life then it might be in your best interest to let them go. Letting go doesn’t always have to be on bad terms or having bad blood between you and this person, despite everything you were friends with at some point. But as we grow older it is important to establish healthy boundaries, this eventually will also attract the right type of people into your life.

Toxic friendships can be a hard situation to deal with, sometimes one person ends up caring and putting in more effort than the other. In situations like this is important to consider if the friendship is worth continuing. Friendships should go both ways always. All the friendships that I’ve had in my life that have truly meant something have been effortless. So if you feel like the person that you’re working towards building a friendship with is more of a burden rather than joyful and peaceful, maybe it is not the right friendship for you. However, if it is a friendship you and the other person would like to work towards I always remember nothing worth having is easy. I hope this helps.

I think realizing how valuable your energy is, is the first step in realizing if this friendship is beneficial for everyone involved or not. Toxic friendships can be detrimental to your mental health and well-being. It’s time to normalize letting go of things that don’t positively serve you. Protect your peace, at the end of the day we only have one life and it is unfair to you to hold on to things that make that life a little bit harder to enjoy.

Well, you heard the hot girls, toxic friendships are out and healthy, balanced, happy friendships and relationships are in all 2023. Protect your energy bestie and let go of what no longer serves you, trust me I know it is not as easy as it sounds but in the end, you will look back and thank yourself for protecting yourself. If you are still reading, first of all, I love you and I hope this helps a little.
