As we start a new year in one of Florida’s largest commuting schools it is likely that there will be newfound parking and traffic issues.Â
For those incoming students here are some tips on how to maneuver through the problem. Most students learn that there is an FIU parking app during orientation, if youâre unaware then the parking app is called FIU mobile. The app has an option for parking on the side menu where you can see the capacity of each parking garage by percentages and it is divided by students and “other” for all parking such as handicapped, staff/faculty, administration, metered, and even carpool. Carpooling is suggested and encouraged by FIU as they have specific parking spots for it in the garages, and theyâre usually closer to the elevators.
Some of the most recent changes to FIU transit have been the addition of a new entrance to MMC campus on southwest 107thavenue from PG5 and the option for additional parking at a lot across from PG5. If there are any newfound updates on transit, FIU will most likely send out an email to the student body through “External Relations.” This will occur when there are new blocked off areas or if transit will increase due to events at FIU such as football games, graduations, construction, housing move-ins, the fair, etc. Make sure to be on the lookout for those updates!
Parking permits vary depending on your current status as an FIU student. For example, students dorming at FIU are labeled as “Housing” and can park in spots that correspond to FIU housing. There is a garage near the REC center, as well as the parking lot near the stadium in front of dorm buildings. As for registered students commuting, you are able to park in any of the garages, with the exception of the garage for FIU housing.Â
You must be a registered student attending classes for that semester and have your car registered to your account. You can go ahead and register it by going on their website https://parking.fiu.edu/ Use your student information as your login.Â
FIU parking and transportation is a very accessible service that offers many forms of contact. In the event that you receive a citation and wish to appeal it you can either go to their website online, call them at (305) 348- 3615 or you can also visit the FIU parking and transportation office located in PG5 for any and all questions/ appeals.
