Thrifting has been my favorite pastime over the last few years, and it’s done more for me than just growing my closet. Whenever I walk into a thrift store, it feels like I’m unlocking a part of myself and opening it up creatively. Whenever I’m in the mood for new clothes, feeling anxious, or just need to let my creativity flow, I go thrifting. I love getting lost in the aisles. It almost feels like a treasure hunt because I never know what I’m going to walk out with, which is one of the reasons I love it so much. For me, thrifting is a form of therapy. It lets me express myself through fashion, spend time alone, and forget about everything else going on in the world.
I’ve always been a creative person, constantly finding new ways to express myself through fashion and discovering the little details that just become identifiable as “me”. The best feeling when I’m thrifting is when I find pieces that feel like they were specifically made for me, like they were meant to end up in my hands. I’ve always been passionate about fashion being a form of self expression, and thrifting makes that feel even more personal and unique.
Whenever I feel a wave of anxiety or boredom, I take a trip to the thrift store. I can spend hours inside (especially my local Goodwill), without noticing how much time has passed. My brain immediately shifts from overthinking to imagining outfits, and it has become this form of escapism that allows my creativity to flow freely through fashion.
Thrifting has also turned into a kind of styling game for me, almost like a “find my Pinterest board in real life” challenge. I love picking up pieces that aren’t easy to style, whether they’re oversized, have a funky pattern, or a unique silhouette, and then figuring out how to make them work. I have also found a recent love for thrift-flipping, where I will take garments apart and resew them into something that fits my style. I shop through every section: women’s, men’s, and even kids’, because you truly never know what you will find. You have to dig through every rack to find the best items, but once you finally find that perfect piece, it feels earned.
My favorite pieces in my closet are ones that I found thrifting, they’re like treasure to me. And because of that, thrifting is like a treasure hunt. You walk in with no idea what you’ll find. I was recently talking to my roommate about this, and my she said it feels like “the items just float to you,” which is honestly so true. I’ll walk in and instantly gravitate towards certain pieces. Lately, I’ve been really into the color teal and wanting to add more of it to my wardrobe, and somehow every time I go thrifting, I find something teal. It’s almost like the items are meant to find you. It’s not like walking into a store where everything is mass produced and everyone owns the same thing, everything is one of a kind, and you just happened to be there at the right moment to find it.
Another reason I love thrifting is the sustainability aspect. More than half of my closet is thrifted. I’m not 100% sustainable, but I am actively trying to be better with my shopping habits. It’s important to bring awareness to the growth of fast fashion and how shopping secondhand can help the environment. Circular fashion matters, the idea that clothes should be reused instead of being thrown away. So many pieces end up in landfills when they could have a second life. Thrifting gives those clothes a new home and keeps that cycle going instead of producing more waste.
I’m writing this not just to talk about one of my favorite hobbies and forms of stress relief, but also to encourage more people to try thrifting and be more mindful about sustainability in fashion. Your style becomes so much more authentic when you’re curating pieces yourself, and it’s even better when it’s kinder to the environment.
Happy thrifting!
