Preparation Tips for your Next Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Whether it is for a job, internship, or grad school, interviews can be stressful. But, the good news is that by staying true to a few tips you can leave a good impression on any interviewer anytime.

The first piece of advice is to make sure that you practice! Think through your answers to common interview questions for your intended position and also do practice interviews with a friend or family member. This will help you feel more prepared and organize your thoughts before the interview.

Secondly, make sure that your answers are clear and well-explained. Provide details that explain why you would be a good fit for the position with every answer. In general, it is a bad thing if the interviewer has to ask a ton of follow-up questions; it means you have not elaborated enough! A good method to use is the STAR method: you explain the situation, then your task and role in the situation; you explain your actions and why and how you did them; then finally you explain the result, what you learned and the outcome of the situation. This method makes sure that the interviewer can better understand your skill and critical thinking in stressful situations.

Lastly, be aware of your body language. Through body language it is often easy to tell if someone is disinterested or unprepared. To avoid giving your interviewer this impression, look them in the eye or at their face, nod along in agreement when applicable, and maintain good posture.

Be sure to use these tips and good luck at your next interview!
