CLEAN ROOM, CLEAN MIND – HOW AN UNORGANIZED SPACE AIDS YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Within the chaos of life the one thing you can control is the space around you. College is an unpredictable time where plans can change at a moment’s notice leaving you feeling overwhelmed. In order to eliminate some of the stressors of college life, it is important to keep your room organized. Keeping a clean and organized space is beneficial for your mental health as it improves productivity and increases creativity.

I have never regretted making my bed in the morning. Making your bed is the easiest way to make your room feel clean and takes limited effort. Even if you feel unproductive all day, at the end of the day you still made your bed and completed a task. When your space is organized you have more motivation to complete tasks and therefore become more productive.

Creativity is an important part of mental health as it serves as an outlet when feeling overwhelmed. Having a clean and organized room has been proven to increase levels of creativity. Your room should be a space where you feel safe to express yourself. Being creative can reduce stress levels and help mental health.

While in college you may have limited control over your living space. But, an organized space has so many benefits for your mental health beyond what I wrote about, but productivity, creativity, and stress are large factors for college students. Instead of viewing your dorm as a small, shared space–make it your sanctuary.
