This weekend, LIFT hosted Michael Lee at F&M. Lee is an incredibly talented spoken word poet. He has received awards such as being named the 2011 “Best Individual Poet” of Collegiate Nationals (CUPSI). He was also ranked at the 2011 Individual World Poetry Slam.
Lee’s presence on campus was a great opportunity for students to learn more about spoken word poetry and even try out some of their own. On Friday, Lee led a workshop in the Writers House where he talked about his craft and interacted personally with a group of students.
Following the workshop, Saturday night Lee performed some of his poetry in the Other Room Theatre. For about an hour before his performance, members of LIFT performed some of their poetry, which was incredibly powerful and applauded. The Other Room Theatre was filled to capacity with people sitting on the floor and standing along the walls.
Lee read various poems on topics like drug addiction, overdose, violence, and death. All his poems were stunning and the audience loved it. He’s engaging and skilled at what his does, captivating the audience’s attention. It was an experience that the students will remember for a long time!
