LGBTQ+ Forum Challenges F&M on Issues of Gender and Sexuality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

On April 3, 2018, F&M held an LGBTQ+ Forum that included panelists ranging from F&M professors, faculty members, and students. The forum discussed a variety of issues from inclusivity and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community at F&M to how the campus can improve upon ensuring that it is educated and can serve as a safe space. The event was introduced by F&M’s a member of the Board of Trustees and alumni from the class of 1973 Sue Washburn. Panelists described their experiences as being a member of the LGBTQ+ community at Franklin & Marshall College. Among some of the topics that were discussed, issues of lack of communication and a proper community were highlighted as students shared stories of misuse of languages and understanding in communicating with people who identify themselves as belonging to the LGBTQ+ community.

It is not a surprise that there are a lot more that can and need to be done to improve inclusivity and diversity here at F&M, but the panelists at the LGBTQ+ forum agreed that we are starting the process towards making this possible.

How can we help support the LGBTQ+ community at F&M?
