HCX Chosen Charity: Look Good, Feel Better

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

It has been a time of introductions for Her Campus Exeter recently. We have introduced you to our wonderful Committee, the Study Abroad Bloggers and Macaw (our favourite new student-led business) and today we are going to add to your list of introductions by presenting you with our chosen charity for the year: Look Good, Feel Better.

This year, Her Campus Exeter really wants to boost the charity work that we do so that we don’t only make an impact through our writing but to the local community in general. Look Good, Feel Better is a cancer support charity that is ‘dedicated to improving the self-esteem, confidence and the well-being of people undergoing cancer treatment.’ This is a really important charity that is close to many of the members and readers of HCX’s heart and in order to show our support, HCX has pledged to raise £750 over this next year to be donated to the charity. We will endeavour to keep you updated on our mission but have a great deal of plans in the works to achieve our goal.

How does Look Good, Feel Better Make a Difference?

Across the 70 regions that Look Good, Feel Better are based, weekly workshops are held for any woman undergoing cancer treatment. These 2-hour workshops provide those undertaking cancer treatment with some much needed TLC allowing them “time to focus on themselves and not their illness.” In the workshops, trained beauty consultants guide the women through a 12-step skincare routine that focuses on “key ‘problem’ areas resulting from cancer treatment” enabling the women to take control over their disease. This idea of ‘control’ is something that Fiona, a lady who has attended LGFB workshops as something that makes the charity particularly important:

On arrival at the workshop, the ladies receive a gift bag which is filled with a range of donated skincare and make-up products suited to their skin tone. This is not any goody bag, it is full to the brim of luxury skincare items from the likes of Chanel and Estee Lauder as a small treat at a time in which small treats are hard to come by. For a full list of all the companies that donate to LGFB, please click here.

LGFB also works alongside the Teenage Cancer Trust to hold special classes for young people featuring “teen-specific” products thus providing young people suffering with cancer some normality at a traumatic time.

In a society in which appearance is becoming increasingly important (rightly or wrongly so), one can only imagine how your confidence can be stunted by not only fighting cancer but also loosing part of your identity in that battle. For this reason, Her Campus believes the work that LGFB do is invaluable in helping to practically and emotionally support women who feel as though they are ‘loosing themselves’ to the disease.

How are HCX going to Help?

Our first fundraising event actually coincides with the launch of Macaw Designs: profits made from the very exciting raffle that will be taking place will be split evenly between both Look Good, Feel Better and The Magic Carpet and will hopefully place us one step closer to raising our £750 for this fantastic charity.
