You’re eyeing up your man. ‘Perfection,’ you whisper to yourself in awe. ‘He is perfection.’ Glorious cheekbones. Piercing blue eyes. Deceptively muscular arms. And then you stop, paralysed with disgust. What in God’s name is that?! He is sporting a pair of leather woven sandals with…SOCKS. It is October. You are not at a historical monument in Crete. This is unacceptable.

What do you do when the guy you really like has something about him that you really don’t like? They can be little things. A feeble bit of facial hair. A snore that resembles a warthog in distress. An unnerving penchant for Avril Lavigne. Do you let it go? Everyone wants to tell the romantic story about how they met a guy and it was instantly perfect. But what happens when the little things build up?

You have three options. Ignore the problem – love/alcohol will surely blur his imperfections. Confront him – grab him by the shoulders and yell in his face ‘IF YOU DON’T STOP SINGING ‘SKATER BOI’ WE ARE OVER.’ Or, and this my preferred method – change him.

Do it gradually. Gently. You must steer him in the right direction with the delicacy of handling a petulant child. You hate his clothes? Go out shopping with him and say ‘Oo, this would look great on you’ while subtly putting his horrific choice back on the rail. His beloved dog is actually a little terror? Throw out phrases like ‘I love that you love animals – especially cats.’ Make him think he’s in control, while actually being the mastermind behind his every move.

It will take time. Weeks, maybe even months. But bear with it. It doesn’t mean you don’t like him, or accept him, just that you recognise his potential to be even better. The end result will be infinitely more rewarding than smiling through gritted teeth as he ‘serenades’ you with his newly bought guitar.
